@zacanger yep, the lamp overpowered the power source on the computer and made it lose just enough power to halt most stuff, but it kinda kept running for a bit
anyway, yeah, I tried sddm, same deal returning to it, I checked home and .Xauthority were owned and deleted them, reinstalled like everything, purged drivers and lightdm, idk
and the only way I can run a session is from one of the other ttys that doesn't have the greeter, thankfully the greeter is on tty7, so I have at least 6 more

@zacanger my computer is a modern debian buster using systemd, lightdm, xfce4, nvidia graphics non-free, which after a crash (turning a lamp on made all peripherals disconnect crashing the desktop) now refuses to login through the greeter, going back to it, but runs mostly fine with a tty with startx /usr/bin/startxfce4
the only warning is an iommu message that nvidia is taking memory wrong??? nobody knows what's wrong

@Efi Ok tbh I have no idea, you've done everything I would do, I'm lost. I'll boost in case someone else has an idea, though!
I actually ended up not even using a greeter anymore, I just startx and got used to it. Not because of any wild bugs like yours, though, just because I sometimes hang out without X

@Nezchan I guess I actually run Ubuntu on two computers now, since I installed Windows in Parallels and then Ubuntu on Linux in WIndows today ๐ค

@Nezchan I think that's a load of shit tbh. Ubuntu is super stable, has really great repos, and great package management. I run Ubuntu on one of my laptops and on my main personal VPS. I would say if you go to something that _isn't_ Ubuntu, that just means you want to spend more time playing with your OS than getting shit done.

Have you tried a different greeter, and have you tried ctrl+alt+f2 (or some other function key)? Do those also go to a tty?

@trwnh @chuck This also! On my computers that I do real work on (for my job, or for myself, anywhere I have important or secret files basically) I still chown some directories that I use frequently, /usr/local for example. That's where my shit is, I need to do stuff in there!

had an interview today for a new infra teammate. i have exactly one sticker on my work laptop, a masto sticker (the current version, my personal laptops have the first version!), and he asked if was active here, which was neat.
