Because of our insurance system. Sure, there are research costs, but it is really about pockets of concentrated market power: medical insurance companies, pharmaceuticals companies, medical equipment companies, medical providers, each of which takes a huge chunk from patients / insurees.

You'd think so, but Medicare & Medicaid / MediCal often have lower reimbursement rates than private insurers.

lnxw48a1My site manager here in #AL recommended I shoot for a lateral position change. The new role would be more server oriented (right as the whole federal government moves away from self hosted servers toward vendor hosted cloud services ... no word on whether that role gets to transition) and less user support oriented.
Are there no pro bono or win-or-no-fee attorneys willing to take a chance on a lawsuit? Every HR person I know would tell you NOT to disparage a former employee because of legal liability.
Also, he rarely speaks outside of required responses to our customers, which can be uncomfortable.

lnxw48a1Today, a lady brought us her personal #Fitbit device to see whether we could fix it. We're not allowed to touch personal devices at all, and told her so. But I did give her a tip: when you're over 50, 30 year olds expect to have to help you with tech devices. I advised her to find a young adult and play the "tech challenged senior" card (she really is that, but she's really a nice person) to get assistance from someone who isn't restricted from helping.
@geniusmusing This brings something to mind. Two of my younger brothers (and zero of my older brothers) became the site "IT guy" at earlier employments because (in both cases) the real IT people worked at a different site and weren't willing to drive over and take care of problems.
I suspect there's a dividing line in which few people born before year X had this experience, but many people born after year X had this experience, but with no random and mass observation data, it is just a suspicion.
They do say that corvids such as crows, ravens, and jays are the smartest of all birds. I even read somewhere that their verbalizations have regional dialects similar to the way humans have regional dialects.
@clacke Your telemarketers are actual people? My callers are almost all fembots ... "Your automobile warranty is expiring. ..."
I suppose a real person might pick up if I did not hang up on the robot, but I'm not willing to sit through the pitch just to tell them I don't own a vehicle.
I think Bill Withers had two songs on the tape. I'm pretty sure "Ain't No Sunshine" (1972) was also on it. These songs were all recorded off of radio, so they were popular and on someone's list of favorites (possibly parents, older siblings, or the neighbor's teen girl who stayed with us for a while).
