    I think Henry Kissinger thinks that #Ukraine joining #NATO would freeze the war at the current footprint and allow #Russia to claim victory while preventing them from expanding their footprint in the future. However, I think this is premature.

    The time to freeze footprints is after #Putin's invasion forces and puppet states are displaced from most or all Ukrainian territory. Meanwhile, negotiations would encourage a future repeat unless there is nothing gained from the invasion.

    I also took the time to look at the HR notices they sent out. It seems I got a pair of small raises, one for cost of living and one for performance.

    It's nice to finally be getting performance raises again.

    It got a little better. Then came Q&A.

    I actually learn some things from the Q&A sessions. For example, there's a policy coming from the VA and OPM that could raise our pay considerably ... $EMPLOYER is still looking at how it applies to various categories of employee.

    My mom has had hearing problems for years, but they've worsened considerably in the last 2-3 years. She doesn't acknowledge the issue, which makes it even harder to communicate with her.

    I also had the experience of seeing perfectly reasonable, moderate positions become "right-wing". In some cases, I shifted with society. In some cases, I haven't.

    I'm also disappointed that we don't have anything like a "radical center wing" that loudly rejects ideas from both the right and the left wings when those ideas can be expected to lead to long-term harm. I think I'd agree more with such a movement much more than I do with either of the #twin_parties, the left-wing and right-wing, and ideas such as anarchy, libertarianism, degrowth, vegan advocacy, and more.

    @simsa04 That's a pretty rapid shift. I honestly think I've shifted leftward a little over the years, but society seems to be shifting faster. I've suddenly had the strange experience of almost agreeing with something a right-winger says ... but they're really saying something that wasn't considered right-wing at all until recently.

    @clacke Maybe you should see whether #Friendica lets you turn off "direct messages" from non-mutuals. I think the wave of #spam is going to highlight how many settings default in the wrong direction.

    I don't think the network is anywhere near ready to deal with organized spammers.

    P is a friend of one of my brothers who shows up at almost all my family's events since high school. He had cataracts in both eyes and was about to stop driving (which would mean ending both of his jobs). He reports that one eye was operated on and that DMV recently restored him to active driver status.

    There are plenty of risks, so talk to your doctors, but the people I knew who had cataract surgery all say it improved their lives.

    OTOH, I would avoid joint replacement as long as you can. Some say their results are worse than their previous symptoms.

    #sonTwo and his wife got some chickens, so they'll have eggs. I think they also got a rooster, so they're building a fully enclosed coop to protect the kids.

    Also protects the rooster. The dogs would tear him up if they thought he was a threat to the kids.
