I will say that patriarchal, colonial Christianity has been (and in some places still is) instrumental in promoting heterosexuality and persecuting queer people, though.

That is wrong, and we Christians have a lot of repentance and remediation to do.

@lilletale I think the mainstream Jewish take on sexuality has been pretty heterosexual for a long time, too. There are scholars today working on other interpretations of key texts, but then the same could be said of Christianity; certainly my own Christian faith has plenty of room for queerness, and we have no record of Jesus saying anything to suggest that heterosexuality was best. (Paul is another matter, but there are major translation and context issues there.)

What I work with? Well, that’s an easy question. I build specialized playlists for themed restaurants!

If it’s an easy job? Well. Ask me to build one for a restaurant. Any kind. Just make one up.

      Chinese?

Okay, when you say “Chinese”, do you mean city or rural? Coast or mainland? South or north? With or without Mongolian influences? How much should the communist regime be acknowledged? Would it be offensive to mix regional styles and –

oh, you get the point. Well, good. It’s not as complicated as it sounds, you just have to know the area. And the restaurant. Once, I built what I thought was the perfect playlist, until I visited the restaurant and realized the noise levels of the area didn’t mesh with my subtle selection. Had to redo the whole thing to make it through the ambient noise, while still remaining thematically appropriate.

yeah, you really do get to appreciate the diverse nature of local cultures. Thing is, though, that I mostly know them through music. Which is important and all, but it’s limited when taken alone. For instance, I have no idea who listens to Peruvian neofolk huayno, or if it’s even a thing in actual Peru, but I know it works well in certain urban upscale restaurants.

If we could go to one of them?

well, here’s the thing: it would either be a place I sounded, or a place someone else did. In either case, I’d be listening for mismatches and mistakes and genre fatalities, and it wouldn’t be pleasant for either of us –

a local fast food joint that pretends nothing and only plays ruthlessly unspecialised commercial radio all the time?

      sure. You’re paying, though!

Spouse is so averse to interacting with medical systems at all now, "all they do is tell me I'm fat," he says.

I'm sympathetic, I'm fat too, but also I've had to badger him for MONTHS to get him to schedule routine blood tests for a med he's on, and to chase up his autism referral. Even for these things he's sure "they're just going to yell at me for being fat."

If fat people are less healthy? This is why. It's not being fat, it's systemic institutional fatphobia.

How can we encourage people to use the image description feature as much as possible without unduly shaming people for whom writing them is too hard? I would especially appreciate your input if you are one of those who have difficulties using the image description feature. - 3/3

Because new people come to fedi all the time it's worth repeating that it's a function that exists that's beneficial to many, but it also comes off as nagging at best, and shaming at worst - 2/3

I know the conversation around image captioning often takes on harsh tones. For many it's a simple thing to do that greatly increases the experience of people who use screen readers, among others, and it's something I'd encourage people to do if they can. But it's also true that writing them isn't very accessible - 1/3

If, like me, you do not have time and skill to make your own clothes, nor executive function to take them to be altered, and you want to wear skirts and dresses with pockets, you might consider eShakti.com as a source of clothing.

I also use them because I am a non-standard size and getting clothes that fit me in charity shops is impossible. They have a wide range of sizes and automatically alter to height; they also do custom sizing for a smol fee.

    Dear medical types,

When I say I eat a reasonably healthy diet and get reasonable amounts of exercise, please believe me.

I know what my weight would be like if I didn't exercise much, because I have my father as an example, and he makes me look slim.

And I know what I would look like if I didn't eat vegetables *or* exercise, because my uncle makes my father look slim.

    Yes, I am obese.

I'm doing *really well* given my genetics, though.

    @cassolotl It is definitely frustrating.

I have been learning that there are some states which are way more distressing to me because of past trauma, and learning to identify those ones faster, which is helping. It's a slow process, though.
