I am amazed at how many Mastodonians responded to the "Paradox of productivity in 2018... you can work yourself to death and will just die broke," toot - this is both heartbreaking and heartwarming. I wish I was joking. If you are in that situation, I am very sorry.

@nix_trismegistus I mean basically making enough money to pay for your own house, transportation, healthcare, education, children's needs, food, utilities, etc. without having to take money from family, live squished in parents' house or in a car, work 3 jobs all day, stuff like that. Where I am from (city in the US) you would need a 100k+ salary minimum to cover this. I worked two jobs (12 hrs+) and was still homeless and with horrible healthcare (I have 2 kids). This is wrong IMHO.

When having money trumps producing anything of value; when the greatest determining factor of future wealth is not education or skill but your parents' wealth, which enables purchase of strategic money-increasers, privileged access to market-moving info to front-run Jane-trader & pension funds, centralized Facebook-esque spy-servers and AI, buying of legislation, and money minting itself...

It matters not what supposed economic system, or ostensible government you have. It is neofeudalism.

@Canageek @bea @JubalBarca Some estimates (Credit Suisse I believe) of global wealth are around $300 trillion. If you factor in the derivatives / shadowbanking it could easily be over $1 quadrillion, although again, difficult to estimate.

Overvaluation generally is probably fairly endemic, although as a percentage of global wealth, the tech sector is < ten trillion at present, so less than 3% of global wealth. Growing rapidly, however.

@Canageek @bea @JubalBarca For example, Goldman Sachs reported record profits due to increased volatility in Q1 2018. It doesn't matter if the global economy is going up in flames, Facebook 2.0 is skyrocketing, or pensions are crashing - what matters is prices flying around and Joe Pensioner participating in his fleecing. The ultrarich make money in boom or catastrophe.

A hundred-billionaire (i.e. Bezos) has privileged access to market-moving information, so even in event of a crash, he (and Buffet, Zuckerberg, etc.) will likely remain wealthy. Or get richer: as they will be able to insider-short the stock with neofeudal power superseding all regulatory agencies and governments. Like IPOs are licenses to print money for the white-glove (or being close to a Central Bank for that matter).

But working hard to produce economic units should be coupled with working hard to make sure the product isn't going in gross proportion to the wrong places. @JubalBarca @artsyhonker It's a lot like that where I am. Basically they talk a lot about housing and affordable housing with some token projects for political theater near election time, but ultimately the game is always, "Less housing, more expensive housing".

But I see a lot of people still buying the secular brand of Prosperity Doctrine, believing that just busting ass, competing harder and winning the Hunger Games will make things ok. I know any emancipation from the hamster machine involves less people believing they can escape by running faster.

Disillusionment, in a kingdom of bullshit, needs to be a daily routine. Like crunches. (The crossfit kind, not the AAA game studio sweatshop kind)
