I'm not opposed in principle to suffrage. I'm not convinced that it's inherently a problem. My view is more shaped by the observation that policy is difficult, and the typical voter does manifestly not comprehend the ramifications of the policies that they espouse. Democracy (or various suffrage systems really) depends upon an informed, intelligent electorate - that clearly doesn't exist.

@augustus No argument; that was more a reflection on the nature and consequences of direct democracy.

@augustus In terms of raw numbers, the more powerful half is the cities. Period. The USA is heavily urbanised, in terms of population. Despite all the complaints, population imbalance was foreseen, and viewed as a problem, and corrected for by the composition of the senate and the electoral college - because if it weren't, what reason would compel smaller (population) states to remain in the union?

In terms of viability, the situation is murkier.

@augustus Actually, you'd really want to rearrange current lines, perhaps carving off the Seattle, San Francisco and Portland areas as city-states.

@augustus Or another layer of federalism. Nation-Region-State-County-Local?

@bobjonkman If you're doing it right, you should have a sharpening stone or a diamond file to hone it to razor sharpness. After all, you want it to slice cleanly.

It doesn't solve the major problems of centralisation, inflexibility and communicatiosn security to any real degree.
