I don't know, but suspect that many who were born into, or grew up in, the free software "era" take for granted how much of an achievement it has been just to get free software a seat at the table. there's a certain "FOSS won!" triumphalism that disregards how prevalent proprietary software still is.

free software *tries* to carve out from that a place for solidarity, for sharing, for collaboration.
it doesn't guarantee these things--how could it? but it tries to make them *possible* and accessible to those of us without a phalanx of lawyers on retainer

the licenses are legal documents, situated in a complex, centuries old history of copyright & patents, the clear trend in which is in separating users from each other, a finely dividing use rights so they can be more thoroughly exploited by rentier techniques

like 2 b perfectly clear: foss as a philosophy has problems; rms is intensely problematic; there's room for huge amounts of valid debate around copyleft and non-commercial and all over the place.
but.
by in large, the people who are currently loudly going on about foss aren't actually proponents of actual foss ( whatever your opinions of that are )
they're just turning it into a dog whistle. like they did with free speech. and cutesy talk. and everything else.

The point at which I begin to question anyone's rights of free association (which includes the right to pick whom *not* to associate with) is *very* close to the point at which that someone has sufficient heft to need being regulated (eg, de facto public utility w/ monopoly or monopsony power)

it defaults to its own lightweight markup, but being emacs can probably be made to handle whatever
