@satchmoz@saxnot I think it is better from a 2fa perspective; there isn't any hardware to hack. SIM cloning is weirdly easy!
It does mean your attack vector is a password and JID, but I don't see that as worst than online accounts at one's cell service provider. I've taken over plenty of T-Mobile and Verizon accounts with *mild* social engineering, so renting a number and parking it at jabber seems fine to me. ^_^
A reason I prefer #Discourse over #Mastodon: so much easier to talk to multiple folks in a single message.
This isn't a critique, I think they both do their thing well. I just see how one doesn't replace the other. Need my long form discussion platform that let's me quick quote folks and mention them at different places in the post! ^_^
@satchmoz@saxnot I think jmp.chat just bridges telephony services (voicemail transcription, SMS forwarding). Signal and WhatsApp, I think those use data connections. The point here would be to have a POTS number forwarded to a jabber ID. That is aside from how your device connects to a network. If you use a SIM connection, then you might as well use a phone for a phone. Well, maybe. ^_^
@satchmoz mentioned phones as a safety issue, and as I am fairly anti-phone in my stance, I wanted to boost that sentiment.
My mother and I often had to flee at a moments notice, or communicate from a strange place. Nearly everyone in my immediate family has been kidnapped at some point, myself included.
Phones are a crucial tool in the fight against violence, to keeping safe via your tribe and public services.
@satchmoz I can't even say what I am working on, because it is so confusing I'd get lost explaining to folks, and I can just show it when it is done. But it will be fun! And I am looking forward to your course! I probably know HTML and CSS, but I learn well by seeing what others are doing. ^_^
@satchmoz Well let's combine resources where possible. Feel free to tag me on talkgroup to discuss services in long form. ^_^
I need to rebuild my Nextcloud server (want a better database than I chose). Waiting on that to offer, so I don't have to migrate with users. But that is a whole thing... =P
@maiki My senator is evil and has sent me written replies on why he is favor of all deregulation of everything allready including this subject... so... my faxes to him have gotten increasingly pointed.
@satchmoz I am gonna start offering free voice and video chat to my tribe, see how that sticks. Maybe I can just make a better experience and they will like it. Even if I personally think video chat is suuuuuuuuuuck. ^_^
I just need to figure out *which* web video tech stack to use...
@satchmoz I support your efforts, as we are after the same goal. As I phase email out, you will end up doing a lot more heavy lifting, since you will be fighting the Matrix: a system of minds you are trying to save, all working against you.
Gawd, at this rate I am going to live in a yurt...
@satchmoz First: I agree with the email, there was more hype than warranted.
Second: "Modification Detection Code" is a weird way to handle this particular issue. And it is a weird issue. I am not an armchair cryptographer, so maybe this is the best solution. Meh. ^_^
@satchmoz, I think as part of my personal journey, email is done. I delete it as I receive it, and I think that changes my relationship with the technology.
I don't need secrets without expiration in my message storage; I keep those in other places. For messages I need a series of one-off secrets that disappear.
Or mundanely, jabber works. ^_^
Can that be my ultimate personal dismissal of email? "Jabber works."
