@algernon Using Chrome? Ouch! As always with g* products, it's basically a personal-data-delivery-machine-to-G. I'm not sure about those features, but there are browsers like Iridium, Ungoogled Chromium or SRware Iron (even further ones like Brave). Someone just has to do the homework to find the suitable one.
@kasra_mp Well, not the ones I tested... I tried e.g. https://github.com/trizen/clyrics and it was ok. However that's indeed a cool thing to manually search for lyrics.
@ChrisWere Believe it or not, Encarta is/was the only M$oft product I still have good feelings about... :DDD Cannot believe it, but it's true. Actually I do miss Encarta sometimes.
@hund@architect It's a pity though there is no easy way to follow an other instance. I mean I'd like to have not only the posts from my instance in the local timeline, but one or two other instances too. However I have to say that it's a good thing if a timeline won't get a posts-overload with all kinds of meaningless stuff. At least I don't like that.
@matt Thank you, just tried xarchiver and I like it. Meanwhile also installed unrar-free, which did the trick too. So anyone having the same issue in the future, check the packages: - unrar-free - unar - xarchiver
@matt@sprocket Great writing, thank you. Your thoughts kind of inspire me to try the paid version of protonmail (so far I only tested the webservice). Those issues might be partly because that bridge thing is beta on linux.
@jt ...oh, and I forgot to mention that a careful internet search with the symptoms of the machine was often helpful for me as there are useful info in forum-threads.
@jt Just remove everything from the mainboard except the parts that are necessary for booting. Check the power supply, ram, fan (the cpu is rarely a problem, mostly the ram or power supply).
@jt Disappointing... These kind of things usually happen on heavily-used consumer grade notebooks... It should not on Thinkpads though (at least I had good experiences with older models). I'd try to clean it, run it in null-configuration and see if there is anything that may help (in that case there is nothing to lose...)
@jt Hmmm, actually I would NOT be satisfied with five years in total... Even under heavy usage... I'd even say that it's disappointing for a Thinkpad (as it's supposed to be an enterprise grade hardware).
@hund "I use the same detergent for washing dishes, hair and laundry" - is it like searching the web, browsing the file system and playing tetris on emacs? I'm not sure you can take someone with an iPhone seriously... :DD Just joking, that minimalist thing is surely good for focusing.
@hund@rysiek@rhiaro Hmmm, isn't there identity verification with XMPP+OMEMO? I mean there is device fingerprinting, although it does not work with some clients. At the moment it looks like matrix/riot.im might have potential to become somewhat popular, but many "ordinary" users just won't grasp why it's a bad idea to use skype, whatsapp&co (and that there are good alternatives to them).
