5 stages of data privacy grief
By tomfishburne from Marketoonist | Tom Fishburne
"Hey Ms. Consumer, you get email, search, maps, friendship interaction and voice-activated homes for free! How good is that? Just don't look at the pipe at the back of your house pumping terabytes of data back to Northern California." This quote was from a fascinating Mark Ritson editorial a few weeks ago in MarketingWeek. Mark wrote about the recent data privacy awakening as "the biggest question our discipline has faced in decades." We're in an interesting stage where data-driven technology is increasingly ubiquitous and accepted. In one example, a recent Jupiter report predicted voice-enabled smart speakers to reach 55% of US households by 2022. And yet there's heightened attention into how that data is used. We're just a month away from the May 25th deadline of The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) in the EU. There has been a steady marketing drumbeat toward personalized, targeted advertising and yet 55% of adults in a recent UK study from YouGov hate the idea of

Go 1.10 added test caching. Generally a good thing, but sometimes you need to disable it. According to the documentation: "The idiomatic way to disable test caching explicitly is to use -count=1." This is because it checks to see if the parameters are in its cachable whitelist, and count is not.

Go really is bad hack piled on top of bad hack.

Threaded conversations in IRC Cloud are so good. Replies are kept in-line to the conversation, but have a small icon in the left channel that is colorized based on the conversation. When you mouse-over the icon then it highlights all messages in that thread.

I've always hated threaded conversations in Slack because of the second window and that I felt it effectively hides the additional messages. This makes it feel useful.

IRC Cloud adding Slack support has been amazing.

@Gargron @angristan the irony is that even if they did have issue with the content, it is probably syndicated across the Fediverse and served up by other instances that are using Cloudflare as a CDN. They really couldn't avoid serving the content unless they stopped services on every instance.

Took my Nexus5 and installed the @Ubports 16.04 image on it. Boots up and shows Unity8 and can generally use things.

Feels like coming home to a more comfortable UI.

None of the apps in the store work, which was expected. They'll have to be recompiled for 16.04 because of the C++ ABI changes between 15.04 and 16.04.

@mhall119 no, not really. I've answered a few questions when asked, but that's been less recently.

I was looking around to see what they're up to. Seems like there's a repo, but some issues with Mesa on Bionic. So have to wait until the Mir team resolves those before I could use it.

In upgrading I got moved to default to X11 instead of Wayland (widely known). It is kinda shocking me how much more solid GNOME Shell feels on X11 rather than Wayland.

Guess now I get to choose between visual tearing of windows and consistent key repeat behavior.

Seriously considering trying to get Unity8 running again.
