Gmail enters the "extend" phase of Embrace, Extend, Extinguish by creating new proprietary features for email then forcing non-gmail users the view the mail through a link with Google Login (and sometimes SMS confirmation!)

@bob  It seems to be simply not scalable in the long term.

Or indeed, for any application where correctness is important.

Proposition: much of the web stack is designed to prioritize "keep going" in the event of inconsistencies/errors. Javascript. PHP. MySQL. HTML rendering engines. Unfortunately, this makes the web platform a very poor choice for coding that has to be "secure" in any way.

Mucking about with povray. Moon and Earth at their correct relative sizes but at 1/25th their average distance.   https://shitposter.club/attachment/1716780

So Cloudflare (the ''man-in-the-middle" as a service' company) is now offering a 'privacy-first' consumer DNS service? Hmm. Maybe I'm paranoid, but I trust not these jackals.

I was always slightly disturbed by the "Pirates of the Caribbean" attraction of Disneyland. Tableau scenes of pirates chasing women. And what do you think are they going to do to those women when they catch them?

Now that OSMand seem to be charging for maps I'm using their tool to make my own from latest OSM planet data (geofabrik.de for ready-made cutouts, or using osmconvert to crop to administrative boundaries from NaturalEarthData.com). Needs scads of memory and processing just the US states will take some time...

Attempted to watch Pirates of the Caribbean but gave up. None of the characters invoked any empathy, so no-one to root for or care about. Just seems to be a string of action sequences tied by the thinnest of "stories" - I've seen better plots in a porn flick. Unfair appraisal?

@strypey A lot of Windows desktop spyware originally came about because there was no package manager to handle version updates. I imagine a progression like this:
    .
    * call home with OS and version info + whether logged in user had admin rights + proprietary licensing info.
    * hey, we make other software, let's promote it.
    .
    * since we're collecting info and promoting software, we'll turn it up to 11 and also use our infrastructure to collect info and promote / install non-affiliated companies' software and make more money.
    .
    * let's do all this by default without informing the user, and do it in the background so they don't interrupt our info and money flow.
