Hattie CatAvoid "cloud-based" antivirus and the like the plague. "Automatically uploads suspicious files to be scanned". Great, something that can arbitrarily steal any file from my computer. Can you spell "backdoor" children? (Note that Windows 10 can automatically send random bits of memory dump to MS as well in the event of a "crash". As well as giving MS the ability to delete random files from your computer as well.) https://shitposter.club/attachment/1768328

Hattie CatI hate it when apps decide to connect as to the Internet as soon as Wifi connectivity established instead of waiting till VPN or till I open them. Especially email clients. Is there a way to force them to be conditional on VPN? (Or at have a "only connect when I say so and not in the background" option.)

Hattie CatBusiness trip. Noticed that OpenStreetMap has the wrong name of my hotel (franchise change?). Fixed in a few minutes with JOSM. If you notice something wrong, and have the time, fix it. Helps other people. Improving the quality of OSM helps provide an alternative to Google Maps. !openstreetmap !mapping
@jordila @maiyannah The companies that actually make the browsers are not even bothering with W3C any more. They don't have to - they are what people use, so what they implement is ipso facto the "standard", whether endorsed by a club like W3C or not. This quote from the editor of WHATWG spec (and a Google engineer) is revealing: 'Where WHATWG values technical precision, he said, the W3C "is an organization supported by large annual fees from large companies, and its primary organizational goal is to ensure these companies remain as paying members.'
@dolus @thatbrickster I've always kind of viewed RAM as a bit of a volatile commodity. If prices are high ATM could you buy the minimum you need and expand later? (Of course, no PC needs more than 640K according to IBM so...)
