@lnxw48a1 @moonman Token ring was more for IBM shops. We had 10BASE5 for Sun workstations. Another site used DECnet for VAX stuff. I've also encountered ECONET and other coaxial-based networks. 10BASE2 was a lot easier to use than 10BASE5. -

Reconstruction of the face of the "Younger Lady", possibly mother of Tutankhamun, by French paleoartist Élisabeth Daynès, and her mummy. The gaping facial wound is considered pre-mortem and was probably what killed her. !egypt !egyptology !mummy https://shitposter.club/attachment/1560833 https://shitposter.club/attachment/1560834 https://shitposter.club/attachment/1560839 -

@bob The Amazon application did it for me. Admittedly my family use Ubuntu on a laptop, but I stick to totally free software where possible/practicable on my linux boxen. -

@bob @staticsafe IPv6 - the technology of tomorrow. (And always will be.) Should've gone with TUBA... -

For a long time Google was able to gain mindshare among software engineers. They were seen as being engineer-friendly. "One of us". I think it's past time to start reigning that back. Make sure that whenever the company is mentioned it doesn't get an easy ride. That uncritical statements aren't allowed to stand. Also that people working at Google don't get any particular special treatment. -

Sometimes the current condition of technology seems hopelessly borked. Can I have a browser which isn't funded by Google or the US state department? (which might not be all that separate when you consider the lobbying). -

Wooden statue of Ka-aper who lived c. 2500BC. The statue with its inlaid eyes of quartz, rock crystal and copper had such life and presence that the workmen who opened his mastaba (tomb) recognized it as village headman, naming it Sheik el-Beled. https://shitposter.club/attachment/1547865 https://shitposter.club/attachment/1547866 !egypt !ancientegypt -

@bob @h @wakest @natecull I sometimes feel disillusioned with technology so I understand how an anti sentiment could arise. Even distinguished CS prof Peter Landin (who I came across in the 90s and wish I got to know better) eventually came to this conclusion.
"Towards the end of his life, Peter became convinced that computing had been a bad idea, giving support to profit-taking corporate interests and a surveillance state, and that he had wasted his energies in promoting it. But whether he liked it or not, his ideas underpin developments to this day."

But then I see what a huge potential benefit to society it is.
