Right now the fediverse is nipping at the heels of the silos.

They know we are here, and they perceive us as a threat. We know this from leaked emails from facebook.

That said, they could attack us in an oblique manner with any number of poisoned waterhole attacks.

Earlier today someone predicted one or more of those platforms just integrate activitypub and crush us by incorporating us.

Another pointed at the potential for procedurally generated instances that just harvest data, or overwhelm our ability to suspend all of the instances they throw up.

When these attacks are adapted to... they'll get concerned, and will try to frame us as part of "the dark web(tm)"...

    That's how we'll know we're winning.

Yah the minecraft aesthetic became a thing, but the aesthetic is just a consequence of conceptualizing the universe as being made of large blocks. There is absolutely nothing special about it besides maybe the creeper.

It can be done so much better. Like conceptualizing everything as blocks makes a whole lot of structures so much more feasible. You could have a world building system that laid down geologic layers and then mixed them up and faulted them, and then sprinkled in valuable resources at certain layers. Then you could put in index fossils to indicate those layers and then you would actually have a mining game.

I suppose once you get a good engine you might as well mod that engine for your minecraft-like instead of creating your own game from the ground up too.

Still minecraft is a terrible game in a lot of ways, the combat being one glaring example.

It confuses me why the genre of block-based procedurally generated survival games isn't bigger. There is like minecraft, starbound, terraria and minetest and..?

Minecraft and starbound are both mechanically terrible games too, and yet the idea of atomizing a procedurally generated world into blocks is so powerful that they still manage to succeed.

There is sooooo much left to explore in this genre.

If you didn't yet know, Google is datamining GMail etc for purchase confirmation emails amongst other things and aggregating it for their own purposes in an extremely detailed way.

(Everything you purchased with order ids, detailed billing details, VAT, including subscriptions etc)

Do not believe a single word about how this information is kept private. There is zero reason to build a system to aggregate this and then not use it to make money out of.

It's crazy that the fourier transform in conceptualizing all periodic waves as sums of sine waves is essentially alchemy. You can create any pitched sound you desire by using only the universal element of the sine wave.

Besides enabling a ton of modern technologies the fourier transform is just plain BEAUTIFUL

Yah I guess that is a good default so people can report anonymously, but I think admins should stress that if you want to actually talk to an instance admin and provide context for why a post/user upset you then you need to dm the admin. The post I read this advice on recommended went on to say how anonymous reports can be abused much more easily than a dm to an instance admin since it is unclear who is doing the reporting (or whether they are human).

Free speech is speech that contributes to a free society and safe environment.

Free speech isn't threatening minorities, loudly putting forth white supremacy, or catcalling women.

Don't let shitty people take this word away from us.

The default of phone screens sleeping if they aren't touched every couple of seconds I believe contributes a lot to their addictive behaviour. Using a phone as a device to enable thinking (like a book) involves taking in information from the device and then processing that information internally. The fact that phones by default sleep/dim after several seconds continously beheads the second part of that process. You have to stop processing and think about tapping your phone to wake it back up.

I think the bottom line with social media is that you can either make money off of a community or you can have a healthy, positive community.
