My new working class New York hero is Steve Brodie, a five feet tall newsie who had hustle like no other: he lived on his own at 9, was a professional competitive walker, noted lifeguard & saved several people from fires, but his claim to fame was diving off the Brooklyn bridge, which he parlayed into owning a sports bar and starring in a touring musical as himself, re-enacting the jump (he always did a free show for news boys). He fed poor folks in winter from his saloon
@ink_slinger Same. ^_^ Said friend's been going for several years now, and always glows about it. I'd like to find out if they offer any kind of recordings (or even streaming, though I doubt it) of it all - would make a great alternative for those unable to attend.
"Edwardes told PinkNews: “Queer womxn are really overlooked. We aren’t welcome in a lot of gay bars, straight bars are often a no-go unless you want to be harassed, and not many people want to work with nights for queer womxn.”
"There’s a real lack of diversity on the LGBT+ scene, and it’s extremely important that we get more representation for trans, non-binary and queer people of colour; that’s where LICK comes in."
"The club, in the famous Vauxhall arches, will have a capacity of 350 and will work up to being open seven days per week."
“In [fairy tales], power is rarely the right tool for survival anyway. Rather the powerless thrive on alliances, often in the form of reciprocated acts of kindness - from beehives that were not raided, birds that were not killed but set free or fed, old women who were saluted with respect. Kindness sown among the meek is harvested in crisis”
Okay, this is some audio mad science. =:D Imagine an analogue synth that doesn't use boring old transistors or tubes to create a nice clean waveform of some kind, but instead, is all based around a series of small *motors* and guitar-style pickups..
@ink_slinger It’s wonderful seeing these options go fully mainstream - and even becoming competitive with meat, as with Iceland (frozen foods chain) offering two qtr pounders for £1. Hopefully Beyond & Impossible can bring their prices right down as sales take off!
So, not that we're going until next year, but I am looking for recommendations as to what places in Australia and New Zealand are great and amazing and I should visit.
I'm kind of at a loss for where to choose.
Boosts encouraged, and gushing, multi-toot reply threads welcome.
