Reminds of something I believe Tim Wu said, about how it feels like today's computing devices are "half for us, and half against us."

@rowan I don't see it as an alternative to SASS, but to frameworks like React. If I were to write a Mastodon clone today I would do it with Custom Elements + Shadow DOM, mostly for performance and to avoid tying myself to any particular framework.

@jamey You are referring to Virtual DOM, which is used by libraries like React and Vue.js.

    Oh, brilliant.

So Windows 10 now has the ability for any application to get system-unique tracking identifiers that persist across reinstalls by storing them in the TPM or UEFI firmware variables...

    Look at these APIs: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/uwp/api/Windows.System.Profile.SystemIdentification

To add insult to injury, the APIs lead into clipc!GetOfflineDeviceUniqueID, which calls into a licensing-related service which would be obfuscated by Warbird...

Cool, MDN publishes their browser compat data as an npm package: https://www.npmjs.com/package/mdn-browser-compat-data

There's even a proof-of-concept :firefox: extension showing how you could use it to gauge the cross-browser compatibility of a given page: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/compat-report/

@softgoat I think you force Firefox to open without decorations by pressing Alt-F3 on the Firefox window, More actions > Special Application Settings > Appearances & Fixes > No titlebar and frame - Apply initially - Yes.

@nightpool The notifications grouping is because we do it manually. We should let Android handle that, but some Android versions don't provide that functionality, so people ended up with tens of notifications :blobpats:

In short, I wish more people had empathy for open-source maintainers and tried to understand things from their point of view. I wrote this post to try to articulate my own feelings as I began to spiral towards my own burnout: https://nolanlawson.com/2017/03/05/what-it-feels-like-to-be-an-open-source-maintainer/

After I wrote that post, I was contacted by dozens of open-source maintainers who told me I captured exactly how they felt. So hopefully it stands as a good insight for anyone trying to understand the mind of an open-source maintainer.

      from Ryan Townsend
For some companies, it's easy to dismiss web performance with the excuse that their business only sells to wealthy western markets who use modern devices on fast networks – but this simply isn't a valid excuse.

@baldur I've been blocking 3rd party scripts by default in uBlock Origin for a few months now and I'm amazed by the number of origins most websites connect to - quite common it's over 20. It's clearly out of hand and I don't think it will improve anytime soon.

@nika The only issue I have (related to Mastodon) is that clicking on notifications doesn't open the app (filled https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1411349). Other then that it works great!
