@banjofox @djsundog From what I recall of the documentary, the origin was a point of contention.

is there a word for things that are named after people who would be unpleased to be associated with the thing in later days?

for example, Sylvester Graham and graham crackers ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Graham_cracker )

the dear reverend graham would abhor the s'more that depends on the crackers named in his sake

@banjofox @djsundog It doesn't exist in China. It's an entirely Chinese American invention. Basically everything on a Chinese food restaurant menu (unless iy's ment to be authentic) was created during the decades of immigrants trying to survive and fit in among the rampant racism they faced.

Someone do a machine learning thing to identify people being combative and warn me so I don't waste my time. Even if I'm the one being combative.

Love to mute annoying, picky people who try to argue over wording rather than consider that they just didn't understand me and ask for clarification. Those sorts of people have a lot of growing to do and aren't worth the trouble.

Truth about creating things: everything is exactly as good as it can be the moment you make it. The next thing will likely be better because you made the thing that came before.

I've found this to be true of both writing and music. The feeling that it's bad doesn't let up, so I just trust that the people who share it and give me money for it with compliments are being honest. After a million words and hundreds of songs, I'm pretty sure the bad is all in my head.

    • Chuck Wendig

Remember how I said a while ago that Mastodon's spread would depend on increasingly niche explanations (and documentation/code/idea contributions) as more people adopted it?

I'd been explaining it by relating it to email or Usenet. I hadn't even thought of BBSes and MMORPG servers before @chuckwendig's post. It doesn't make sense to me, but it seems to make sense to others, which is great!
