@garbados @lucidiot @bob i also think "the network is the computer" can be a reasonable and empowering place to land, architecturally. (look at all those ideas in plan9.)

it's just that we don't control our networks or our computers or our software, and our models of the network are terrible for autonomy, self governance, and resilience against network fracture and corporate network capture at the individual human and community-of-humans levels.

@bob @lucidiot @garbados contra this position, i think it will not work out, because horrible business models are the fabric of our civilization and we have no way to escape them.

but then i also think that our civilization itself will not work out, and i am a bitter pessimist, so don't listen to me and keep trying to fix it, plz.

@garbados @lucidiot java is and has always been terrible in many important ways, but i think in 2017 browsers are much more troubling than java ever was, because they are so much _better_ at what they do. they've bootstrapped us into the network-is-the-computer future that the heads at sun envisioned all those years ago, in a way that sun could never quite figure out how to get to.

unfortunately it turns out that the network-is-the-computer future sucks.

@kaileighblue yeah i mean i'd hate to see it dominate the tone of things around here but on the other hand bagging on powerful jerks who are into white supremacy and whatnot for being bad people doesn't exactly seem out of keeping with this being a safe space.

@soulcutter yeah, those things seem true, but do you really want to suggest that a process that haphazard, error prone, and (let's face it) brutally inhumane couldn't be improved at all?

i mean, just dispensing with whiteboard bullshit would save a lot of people a lot of pain, for example.

@skrishna i really profoundly hate discovery so far no matter how much i try to like it (i'm still watching, and i hope that i will eventually change my mind), but i think this is a reasonable take.

i will personally try not to do any gatekeeping. it's probably healthier for me to think that star trek is just shit now and move on with life than to worry about whether disco is "real" trek.

I remembered today, and verified in my chat logs, that I was using the phrase "federated GitHub replacement" in 2010. Maybe in 2017, the year of federated everything, this is a thing we can have? At core I just want to be able to fork a repo from another site, have upstream be able to discover which forks exist, and perhaps be able to create cross-site pull requests.

@clacke @vilmibm i'm thinking about doing that for photo galleries now, in fact. i have a silly python script for it, but it seems like really it could just be a few lines of imagemagick wrapper...

i've been using the conceptual descendant of a pretty similar thing for a good ~16 years...

as ideas go, it's aged a lot better than most of the rest of what was in my head at 19 or 20.
