@vfrmedia @cypnk yeah. this was ages ago, so the specifics are hazy, but i think they were doing custom fabrication or chemical engineering (something like that) for a _relatively_ small clientele.

it still struck me as fairly insane.

@maiki @tomasino good writeup. meta-enter or meta-shift-enter for new terms (and mostly fullscreening stuff on workspaces dedicated to a specific purpose) is definitely where it's at for me.

@cypnk @uranther yeah - i spent years of my life slowly modernizing a pretty crazy old-school php situation, and currently do ops stuff for a codebase with a big slab of 2006-style php in it.

i think you can write pretty mellow php these days (and for all the stupid quirks it's nowhere near as much worse than python/ruby/whatever as they'd have you believe) but the further back you go the more horrors lurk.

@cypnk i once found myself in a sales seminar put on by a (evil, vampiric, suit-laden) consulting company that did big ERP conversions. that part is a long boring story, but it left me with a good anecdote for these conversations: the dude sitting next to me was doing slightly over a billion in revenue and _everything was in excel_. inventory, billing, all the accounts, the works.

@maiki oh, no worries - it's a stable, low-frequency-of-updates project that i hack minor fixes into once or twice a year, and there is no observable evidence that anyone besides me has ever used it, so i would not exactly make it a priority. :)

@maiki i mostly have things scaled up to where it's tolerable, but hidpi life in linux generally sure is still a painful thing. especially if you live outside of gnome / kde land...

careful, my cat keeps using his butt to accidentally discover features i've never seen in software i've been using for decades.

who knows what an intentional beak can do.
