As the US pulls away from the #UN, China moves in, and another step is taken toward a new world order.
What is happening there affects us all. Hopefully, other countries take bold steps to preserve liberalism and internationalism.

@KARiley40 @Canageek That's a very thoughtful observation.
I fully agree that all forums -- in real space or online -- require active moderation. Otherwise, they just turn into the horror Reddit, Twitter, and Facebook have become.
@Mainebot I really like Thinkpads, and Dells.
This place has refurbished Dell and Lenovo laptops in excellent condition:
You can't go wrong with a Thinkpad T series: http://www.laptopcloseout.ca/lenovo-thinkpad-t450-3
I quite like the X series (more compact model): http://www.laptopcloseout.ca/catalogsearch/result/?q=x250
@Canageek That's a good question. I don't know of any aggregators that I would recommend.
I mainly visit cbc.ca/news and thestar.com for local news.
I mostly read The Guardian for international news (but lots of other sources as well), and wish we had something of that calibre in Canada, focusing on news about the country and of interest to Canadians in particular.
I read quite a bit of news, possibly a bit too much. 😄
@Canageek I agree. Reddit is disgusting over-all, for some reason. The Canada, BC, and Vancouver-related forums are all vitriolic and hateful too. What's wrong with Reddit??
I think I'm finally ready to leave there, just as I left Twitter -- and for the same reasons.
@thurloat I think that's a reasonable estimation of what's going on.
It seems to me that, while a number of experienced professionals hang around there, most are isolated hobbyists of the sort you describe. I don't know that, though I do know they are utterly awful and hateful.
It sucks, but a silver lining is that this sort of stuff has indeed caused me to pull away from social media, which is a good thing. Real space is where it's at. 😄
The /r/linux and /r/python sub reddits are alt-right cesspools lately. So much hate, #sexism, and #racism there.
I wonder if this is more a tech community issue, a reddit issue, or both. It's so awful and disheartening. No wonder other women don't feel comfortable and have left.

Interesting and illuminating explainer by Vox on #45 and Putin's propaganda, how they do it, and its why it's done.
I wonder if they now realise that wasn't such a good idea.

@ink_slinger @MatejLach Ya. That was what I was trying to say in my last comment to you. 😉
Let's Encrypt is running a funding drive. I just donated to help make the Internet more secure and safe.
If you have the means, I suggest you donate too! ☺
@ink_slinger @MatejLach Besides, if the US really was so bad to Russia in the past, they probably consider them an enemy. 😄
Back to my earlier comment -- if you interfere with another country's elections, you are not their friend, no matter what you or they say.
@MatejLach @ink_slinger Well, this particular conversation isn't about who did the worse things. It's about whether democrats were reasnable in characterising Russia as an enemy. I think that's reasonable. If you don't, that's cool too.
A big part of my point here is that it's okay for people to have differing views. For the US (or for most countries) to consider Russia an enemy is reasonable.
