On the outskirts of our small city, there is a vocational agricultural school. At that school, there is a working farm. At the farm, there is a pasture. In that pasture, this day, there is a single lone cow. Where the rest of herd has gone, I can't say, and that single cow doesn't seem to mind a little alone time in the middle of the field. That is all. #smallstories

Try to memorize one constellation you donβt already know and find it in the sky tonight.

"If he's been the sort of boy who acquired a nickname, he no doubt would be known as Professor, but he wasn't that sort of boy. He was liked when noticed, but not noticed much, and that did him no harm either. " -- from The Book of Dust, by Philip Pullman, page 3

I know we have a lot of comic/graphic artists here, so I wanted to share this very cool video by Nerdwriter (someone I support via Patreon) about the making of a Comic Page, through the lens of Maus and Spiegelman. I love the larger look at how all of the pieces and panels work together for one narrative purpose.

When we retire, she says, this is the kind of place we will get. We're at an Air BnB, a loft. Small but cozy. Centrally located. It won't be large enough for the grandkids, though, she adds, so it will be our little getaway, a second home. She's dreaming of the future, and I'm with her. Who knows about the reality of the dream. We're public educators, for goodness sake. For now, we soak in the possibilities, and head out to the art museum as if we had all the time in the world. #smallstories

"I'd begun to see at some of the ways that generosity can be, not a burden, but a real enhancement of mutual care. Mac seemed all the grander, less old and secret, much funnier and all the more trustworthy as a friend." -- Reynolds Price, from Modern America Memoirs, page 177 (originally found in Price's Clear Pictures)

I follow this image sharing bot all the time because of its neat historical images. Today, it shows me a place (via 1884) about 30 minutes down the highway from me. Cool and weird, how this can happen. -

Lost lands.
My needle

spinning
mad circles

@mirabilis Huh. Pumpkin thief? Here, the squirrels and chipmunks would be up in arms (and tails) at the loss of a vital food source. Our pumpkins have deep holes in them, from all the nibbling.

@djsundog What a great story -- I can almost see the birds, and their colors, set against the snow. Hummingbirds are amazing to watch. I hope yours know it might be nearly time to get a move on and find safety for the winter.

I have a flash-drive in my car, chock full of songs and albums. About 50 gigs worth. But my stereo doesn't show me track titles, only file numbers. On one hand, it's frustrating not being able to find things. On the other, it provides for moments of unexpected re-discoveries. I'll clickclickclick through the drive (so to speak) and land, and listen. Yesterday, The Lumineers came on, and I thought, this is the perfect album for this particular moment in time. The world can align. #smallstories

So frustrated by my guitar -- well, by my playing -- that I angrily crank the tuning pegs. Moving towards open tuning is like strangling wood and wire. The strings moan in different keys as tension shifts, in an audible sign of resistance. I'm listening. I am. I slow down, more gentle. I'm still hoping to find another sound to break me out of whatever it is I am locked into. I slide the pick across strings. Listen to wide open space. I let it ring out. Somewhere, there's a song. #smallstories

@modgethanc So interesting that something so small, like a pebble or a rock, can create such ripples. I imagine your story as being yet another ripple from that rock, reaching us here as fellow #smallstories readers. Safe journeys!

"Some maps are made for those who think in a different way"
Some nights are made for starlight:
constellations on parade.I'll close my eyes, and wander,
leave the paper map behind.
Imagine all the possibilities,
all the unknowns I will find. And when I return, home, here,
haunted by these dreams,
I'll take this paper and this pen
and draft a route beyond the seams#smallpoems response

What if every map became pinned
on top of
every other map,
so that
where our lands
disappeared,
other lands,
appeared,
and hidden within each
connector point
of each map,
overlap,
was a conversation about
how our common
coordinates
inspire the possibility
of poems.
