A holiday wreath hangs on our front door. It's been up for weeks now. Maybe it's the post-Christmas Blues, but I am finding myself annoyed at its presence. Whenever I look out the front door window, everything becomes framed by the wreath's green inner circle. In a week, the wreath will be gone, and I'll probably miss it. As it is, I am already looking at the tree in the sun room with an eye towards removal. I need to remind myself: there's plenty of time for all that. Relax. #smallstories

You hear her say, "Some nights, after I watch my sitcom at five o'clock, I just go to bed when it's done." Later, your own father -- at least a decade older than your visiting sitcom-watching neighbor -- will remark, "It seems as if she has given up." The five hours she spent with your family for Christmas Eve dinner and church service doesn't seem enough. But what are you to do? She's an elderly neighbor, alone. When snow comes on Christmas, you make sure she is shoveled out. #smallstories

Even the most cynical would be hard-pressed not to revel in the beautiful winter snowfall outside this morning. It's a lovely storm -- steady falling snowflakes. The dog and I were the first ones up, and out. We were alone on the streets of Christmas morning. He was anxious to return home -- perhaps he smelled the gift under the tree or missed the warmth -- but I kept us moving forward, enjoying the dark, the quiet, the snow all around us, unspoiled by cars and yes, other people. #smallstories

@dogtrax @wentale #smallpoems in re #smallpoems. I reversed your poem a bit and whittled it into this:
Paper cuts
on my tongue
incised by stories.
Scars, too,
scriven deep.
Always there.
Always written.
Strewn
and wind driven
until scabbed over
and scarified,
waiting
the next cut. -

@snoothy @alx Sort of true (mostly nonfic, small looks at life's moments) but there are no rules or requirements or secret handshakes because no one owns a hashtag. :) Some folks are sharing short fiction on the tag. #smallstories Welcome.

He sighed, looked out the window. "Mr. H," he called out. "It's so dark out there!"
I walked over. We both stared at the afternoon. Indeed, the combination of shortening days and dreary rain had made 3:15 p.m. seem like evening.
Here was a kid who barely bottles his energy to attend to learning. He was ready to run.
I started to explain the Winter Solstice. He didn't want to hear the science of it. The bell sounded.
"We need more sunshine!" he shouted, as he darted away, gone.

"Still, anyways, you should try."
"Why?"
The old man paused. "My future self was a know-it-all who didn't know-it-all," he explained, with a guffaw. "Best to ignore what might happen and go on ahead with what will happen."
The old man winked at me.
"When I was your age, I remember thinking what you're thinking. It may not work out, but go on ... give it a try."
So, you know, I did. I followed the advice of my future self ignoring his future self. -

She always warned him not to leave the plug in. He figured she just said that ... to, well, say that. Still, day after day, he listened. He obeyed. He pulled the plug out. Until the day he didn't. Why, you might wonder? What was it about this particular day? Nothing special, he would tell you. Just ... well ... what would happen? Really? It's not as if the world would fall apart if the plug was in when they were out. Right? He found out hard way that she was right. Always had been.

@masu @Food @lauraritchie @MatheusRV @safertohatethem @sixohsix
The #MusicCollab spirit is what makes the potential of Mastodon special, I think ... an invitation in the stream ... shared interests ... collaborations ... a gathering together ... support for each other ... sharing out ....
I suspect it could be a nice model for other collaborations ... in the same vein as Kintsugi Journal does with writing and art here ...

About two months ago, I asked around here whether anyone would be interested in a project of random music collaborations, and I'm super excited to announce that songs are in and the album is actually happening! We will release on Dec 17 with four contributions by
@dogtrax @Food
@lauraritchie
@MatheusRV
@safertohatethem
Michael, who is not on Mastodon
and me!@sixohsix will do the mastering.
I love all the songs already and I hope everyone else will as well!
