In education - and therefore in learning theory generally - we have this presumption that (in English) words simply mean what they mean.

The thought occurred to me the other day as the translator explained to me that in Chinese the speaker speaks around a point rather than making it directly. And this led me to wonder about the presumption we have that in English we speak directly, and I realized that we do not.

In English we think we speak directly. But everything we say in English is a metaphor.

@Trev That's quite an obstacle. What we really need is an option on our accounts to simply 'move', where we could select (type-in or drop-down) the instance of Mastodon we want to move to.

I know, it's open source, so if I really want a feature I should/could code it. But you know, time...

@Trev Trev, I would consider this, but I don't know the mechanics of preserving my identity over the move, nor whether it's even possible. I don't want to lose my friend network, and I don't want someone else to take my place as @Downes

I adjusted my Mastodon -> Twitter IFTTT applet to require that I use the hashtag #tweet before it fires.

You can't underestimate the importance of "yes", of giving oneself permission to act and (better) create. It's the advice I find myself giving most often to people (and to myself). Don't wait, don't ask: simply use your own good judgement and then do what needs to be done. @lauraritchie
