@katebowles it's like spinning plates, but we're on the plates and I didn't know I was on a plate until it wobbled. Then it's too late to look down, stop spinning, or make it all slow down into a nice tea party.
I hope you can grieve in the garden or at the sea, and celebrate too. That balance thing is impossible to navigate sometimes, and certainly not rational.
condolences, congratulations, and a cup of tea for when it all stops spinning. -sent from the next spinning plate over.
Kevin, teachers like you plant seeds that will grow EITHER despite or with whatever system they find themselves coming through, when the time is right, hopefully.
I want them to know they don't have to wait for some magic day or to be 'done' learning before they own what they do and be the ones building, not just walking on, their paths. There are many things to learn, but waiting for 'then' to do them... too many people waiting & 'then' is forever out of reach.
I was having one of those #mastodonmemories moments about the depth of academic chats we had last November and thought- if I want that to be here, maybe it's time to relight that lamp.
and I always tell them, the more they invest, do, give to their learning, the more I'll give back. I got a lot of energy, you know. I never had anyone exhaust my capacity to learn stuff & give back, and they took me across the world one year.
besides, when someone really gets it, it's worth my time, and I learn from them too.
yesterday I had a frank talk to my students in one class. It's the difference between here's what you do to pass the assessment for the class, and here's what you CAN do with all the opportunities and connections to learn for your life, as well as the assessment.
One of those things you can't 'know' without hindsight, but want to pass on so others have it as foresight. Doesn't always sink in at the time for students, but when it does - magic.
This morning there was a hum in the house early. Heating came on in the night- wasn't planned, but neither was the cold. Going to the window, first I noticed the rim of condensation around the edges where the glass touches the frame, then looked out and saw gulls in the plowed field (farmers still harvesting the spuds). Cold out there.
Some kids from the village church did a 'sleep-out' on the streets in town to raise money for homeless.
They will appreciate their beds tonight. #smallstories
@marcjones if you do, be sure to get the backpack to hold all you gather, but I think that needs an expansion pack as well. Otherwise where do you put your 57 swords of knowledge? http://www.thinkgeek.com/product/jtji/
@eox oh my goodness! I hope you are receiving good care. We have such robust minds, it is not pleasant when our bodies take a toll. Hope you can keep your spirits up as you mend.
and just to avoid confusion, I do know a knee is not about the anthem. It's the vehicle for other messages I'm interested, how it's used, and who hears them or not.
@x28de no, I didn't know that one - but I'll add it ! :D thank you!!
I love that stuff- did a M-level project on expressive intonation using a (now primitive) Fourrier transform analysis software package - and I have a great cassette tape of the harmonics of a bell.. uncompiled and recompiled. I found a tape player, but haven't yet digitised it... It's a good kind of 'to do' list. :)
I run a music class that is for people thinking about teaching- I made supplemental content as an OER and host it on my website. The idea is to think, look outward, and connect.
If you are a musician, learner, performer, teacher, you may find it interesting. There's no sign up, no test, just join in as and when you like :)
