@wion True! I find my kids are far more dialed into things we can do to make a (very small) difference than the new channels. And I think I notice more both the good and bad going on in my own neighbourhood.

Somehow since my move I’ve stopped listening to the CBC, which was apparently my last source of mainstream news. When someone at work referenced an incident in Florida, I was the only person who had no idea what had happened, and that seemed just fine.
My awareness of world events is filtered through a 15, 12 & 9-year old and what I read here on Mastodon.

@Downes All the things we learn in school... Maybe related, maybe not.
I now have 2 kids who have left school for reasons related to structure and content, and culture. They seem to have mostly learned the bad stuff.
My son wrote about school last year (the part he wrote is the good part): https://heretothere.trubox.ca/lesson-i-need-to-learn/
Now, he is doing well, learning on his own at home, creating his own PLE (though he doesn't know that term). I think I'll share your site with him & see what he thinks ;)

After a long weekend, thinking about how to answer the question, "How was your weekend?"
Depending on the moment it could be described as a tough weekend facing health issues of dad and silence issues of 16-yo son. Or, it was a wonderful weekend with family skiing, laughing, puzzle building, trivia-ing, hot-tubbing and olympics watching. How many times did I answer, "OK" when what I meant was "wonderfully complicated." #smallstories

I have a new big boss, an accountant who has new experience in learning or training. I quite like her except that she seems set on "figuring out this learning stuff all on her own." As the training advisor, I know I could assist her in her journey if she would ask. Then I wonder how many times I have unknowingly been her in my own life. #smallstories

Dear veterans!
It would be great if some of you would volunteer to keep an eye on #NeedHelp and similar hashtags (you can pin them),
As well as keep an eye on your Local Timeline (no matter the server) and welcome new people onboard! There are a lot of "hello world" messages popping up, and we can all help with greeting these people and #welcome them into the herd!

Sitting in a conference room waiting for a meeting and I noticed 3 largish filing drawers labelled Grievances 1994-2007, Grievances 2008-2012, and Grievances 2013-14 respectively. Wondering how many drawers it takes to house the files from 2015-2017

I got on the train this morning and noticed it was busier than normal. Then I looked at the time, I was two trains behind normal. Oops.

if you have a personal web log, please reply with the url!
an attempt to collect everyone’s blogs - so as to not let precious non-commercial content go unread and unnoticed - is likely the only time i’ll ever ask:
please boost this toot.

@thelibrarian I was in a brand new train station on Saturday when I realized that I had forgotten my phone and noticed that in the huge station, there was not a single pay phone. And now that you mention it, I don't think it had a water fountain either. And certainly no murals, only blank canvases of concrete.

@Gargron Sending kind thoughts your way.
There are no wrong feelings. You feel what you feel and you always have a right to (maybe responsibility to) feel what you feel. (Sometimes it's even good to do nothing but wade in those darker feelings for a while rather than pushing them down.)

@dogtrax As I was debating whether to buy this one I suddenly remembered ordering Orbiting the Giant Hairball (not yet received) after it was recommended by Laura.
Wait! Now I think I need a tiny library (like the one I saw two streets up) in the front yard filled only with Mastodon-inspired books.
But now I want to buy it from a small bookseller (not Amazon). I don't even know where to start to attempt such a thing any more.

@mappingcat OK. So I am going to ask a dumb question. I noticed the moon on walk to work this morning. It looked like a sliver (quarter?) moon. How can one tell an eclipse from a partially covered moon (without watching the whole thing happen)?

If you know of an artist selling on Etsy: be sure to support them if you're ever in need of wares similar to their offering.
I just snagged 2 belt buckles and a belt from someone thanks to Etsy.
I hate finding new belts due to my preferences in a buckle.
Now I won't care ever again. These buckles should last the rest of my life.
That's how good people are.
Thanks to the internet 'local' is 'global'. Use that to your advantage.
