    Folks,
no axe to grind, just a description of finding my way around the #fediverse from a complete newbie and ultimately why I chose #Mastodon .

I fully expect LawnMowerMan to be back in 20 minutes or so with a leaf blower (gasoline powered, of course) making a third round of the property to make sure that every severed blade of grass is on the road, not on the lawn.

Of course, the Bobcat skidsteer couldn't get anywhere close to the garden shed, the fence posts, the trees and shrubbery. So now LawnMowerMan is back with a ginormous weed whacker (gasoline powered, of course), and making another round of the property to make sure every blade of grass is less than 1.8in high.

Neighbour has hired a garden service, which is mowing the lawn using a Bobcat skidsteer with a lawnmower attachment. How much power does it take to lop the heads off a few blades of grass? #OhTheNoise! #OhTheFumes!

When I was young people would call me "Young fella", and I would be insulted because they couldn't see past my age. Now that I'm a #duffer people call me "Young fella" and I'm insulted because all they see is my age...

@kensanata I've made plans with friends & family to - in case of my untimely demise - continue running my domains, and serve a static snapshot of contents. All the tools to do this are prepared, all passwords in a KeePassXC database, etc. I've written up instructions about what needs to be shut down and how, have a small amount of money set aside for a few years of hosting costs, so my content should be good for a decade or two after I'm gone. We should all be doing something similar.

We tell each other to self host in order to escape the big corps. But when we die, all the self hosted stuff is going to get wiped and history will only remember the archives that got stored by the big corps. And you know how history is written by the winners. Do we need a way to automatically hand over our sites to archive.org or similar? Or send them disc images? Nobody expects to get run over by a car but some of us will, today. I made no plans for this.

Chrome isn't a web browser. It's a tentacle of Google that takes over your computer, spies on you, and controls everything you see.

Must have been someone else. The only static website generator I've used is a text editor :-) There's a bunch of #WordPress installations I maintain, and I run a MediaWiki instance. Neither qualifies as "static"... / @mcscx2 @steckhalter

In addition to SMTP there's !XMPP and #IRC, but you're right, they don't have mainstream adoption (unless you consider the bastardized versions produced by Cisco and Slack)
