No Slack for you! Microsoft puts rival app on internal list of ‘prohibited and discouraged’ software
      from GeekWire
Slack is on an internal Microsoft list of prohibited technology — software, apps, online services and plug-ins that the company doesn’t want its employees using as part of their day-to-day work. But the document, obtained by GeekWire, asserts that the primary reason is security, not competition. And Slack is just one of many on the list.

Recently Github is sending me a device verification email every single time I need to login, and I need to do this after every browser start because my default setting is to throw away all the cookies except for a few selected sites (my own sites and Mastodon, basically). So, what changed? Did I get a new version of Firefox/Purebrowser that somehow prevents Github from fingerprinting my browser? Did Github add fingerprinting just recently?

reminder that #BryanLunduke that is marketing chief of #purism, gave support for #ICE.

Remember, that racist agency that even imprisons children.

He made a video commenting on the removal of CTO from ICE from a #github conference.

    He uses following argumentation:

    - let's leave politics aside
    - if left or right I don't care
    - you cannot make everyone happy
    - if you remove someone from a conference, more people will be mad at you
    - ignore the critism, host anyone

this is the story of oportunism.
this is the story of marketing as a means

the video is sponsored by #purism. And his followers on twitter do have a clear position, that support his view points.
Those are the ones purism is advertised to.

    Also:
    Lunduke
makes punshlines against #mozilla and #riseup as supporter of #antifa that he describes as a terrorist organisation.

    ♲ @Bubu@chaos.social: I'm *really* not happy about the #Github #Sponsors project (github.com/sponsors).
It'll bind a lot of open source project much more strongly to github's closed, proprietary ecosystem if that's where they have any chance of getting some money.

It's so hypocritical that soo many #FOSS projects are hosted on a non-free platform. With #Gitlab there's even a superior just as easy to use alternative there.

And most people are celebrating this move by github 😢.

Please remember that #Git is by nature distributed. So when migrating from (for example) #GitHub to (for example) #GitLab please, please, please do NOT create a brand new repository and git add the files, or the entire commit history will be lost. Instead, just push the existing repository to your new hosting service.

    > #WarmShowers had their code on #github but in August 2017 they changed the platform and it's now proprietary software.

I've heard enough stories like this to find it disturbing. The #TImeBank exchange #CommunityWeaver comes to mind, the online banking platform #Cyclos, and others. Understanding why this happens and figuring out how to prevent it is really important.

Repos hosted on GitHub and similar platforms often leak crypto secrets and API keys:

    https://www.ndss-symposium.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/ndss2019_04B-3_Meli_paper.pdf (PDF file)

    – researchers scanned 13% of public GitHub repos
    – 100,000 repos contained secrets; thousands of new secrets are leaked every day
    – GitHub develops "token scanning" to help removing secrets, however, dedicated scanners like TruffleHog are ineffective according to the paper

So, I just published "Building software together with Git" on my #blog: https://eliotberriot.com/blog/2019/03/05/building-sotfware-together-with-git/ 🎉

It's a rather high-level, non-technical overview explaining what is software collaboration and how tools like #Git and #GitHub actually help with that.

It assumes little prior knowlegde from the reader, and attempts to explain the technical concepts in accessible ways.

Many thanks to @GinnyMcQueen for the initial idea, @y6nH for proofreading and everyone for the feedback!

@musicman @strypey I don't know if #Github sold themselves because they were running out of money, but just a few years ago, freedom-focused projects that did not use GH because of its proprietary secret sauce faced a rushed move when a less-proprietary competitor called #Gitorious closed. Many of these other platforms were not well-known until that event.

It just occurred to me that #GitHub ran out of money and had to sell themselves to MS. While companies like #Loomio, whose code is 100% free under #AGPL, and #Wire (A/GPL), are still in business. Doesn't that prove that the infamous "#OpenSource almost everything" creed of the GH founders is a failure, and you might as well free all your code? (looking at you #GitLab)
