I have not read the linked GitHub issue, just the article, but I think the author's take is not the way it should be done.
First of all, sometimes, #hashtags belong to the text. That they're links in the midst of plain text is part of what makes them valuable, just as the embedded links in the person's article.
Secondly, having tags within the text does not preclude also having tags that are attached to posts but not within them. They could point to the same resources or even have different resources. For example, embedded tags could be based on the original post's home instance and attached tags could be based on the reader's home instance. This would give two different views of the tags' contents, assuming that the poster and the reader are not using the same instance.
Finally, yes spammers and such can overuse and attempt to game tags to increase their posts' visibility. But the answer to that is for the software (Mastodon or whatever) to strictly enforce limits on the number of tags. Any time there's a tool to raise the visibility of something you post, it will be misused if possible. Long before hashtag abuse, there was meta tag abuse on web pages, when such tags were used to help decide which results to show in web pages. These days, I'm not even sure search engines still use meta tags to categorize sites and surface them in search results.
@clacke Yeah, I am not a fan of most autoformatting. I would rather the person explicitly requests "change what I wrote" instead. #Hyperlinking (including @mentions, #hashtags, !bangtags) is the main exception.
To Fediverse users who use screen readers: do you prefer people to integrate #hashtags inside the text, or.... do you prefer when they repeat the word by listing all the hashtags at the end, after the text? Please boost. #hashtag
Use #hashtags to brake out of the #filterbubles in the #dotcons the one i use for the #climatechoas discussion is #deathcult as #XR reveled it as outreach to much more mainstream people. The problems we face is that almost everyone comes up with "sulutions" to climate change that are still within the #deathcult so no real sulution at all. Continuing sad and bad.
Does anyone here rely on screen readers or #braille or something? How does your tool recognise #hashtags? Is the usage of many tags rather annoying for you?
@andycuccaro please feel free to speak with #hashtags! It makes it a lot easier for people to find useful information about topics they're interested in, and people with common interest to follow. At least when you're discussing serious stuff, and not just #shiptoasting ;)
"... what happened recently with ... trending hashtags ..." (see @dansup's post about 4 hours ago) . I don't know what happened with #Twitter trending #hashtags, but their way of listing what is trending is of limited utility anyway. If it becomes "important", groups will conspire to post and repeat posts using the same tag in a short time period and sites may filter / censor which tags make the list.
And then you should start to follow people that seem interesting to you. ---- In #Tusky, tap on the menu at the top-left and then tap on 'Search' - search or keywords or #hashtags - for example:
In version 2.4.1 these trending hashtags are still visible when you search on hashtags. 80% of the results are 0 and the graphs are useless IMO. I fixed this with simple CSS. Put this in your custom.scss and your themes:
Those last three toots contain the most popular #hashtags from posts originating on #SocialCoop since it started.
Since there is no built-in feature for this, I extracted them from the DB using:
select concat('#',name) from statuses_tags left join tags on tag_id=tags.id left join statuses on statuses.id=status_id where local='t' group by name order by COUNT(name) desc LIMIT 100
NO.
