I flip-flop between techno utopianism (we can have all this, AND MORE, and still save the planet because TECHNOLOGY) and degrowth (perhaps a lower quality of life in some respects, but less formal work and more time with friends and family, plus the world doesn't burn).

I've kinda never been the same since I learned the lyrics to the Circle of Life translate to "hey look it's a lion. yes it's a lion."

@bgcarlisle Yeah. It feels like pretty dramatic government censorship, but it also feels completely warranted.

@bgcarlisle I read a thing earlier today where a former Facebook investor was saying governments should just ban Facebook and Twitter until they can get their shit together. I have mixed feelings about that, but it'd be interesting to see what would happen if a few big democratic states did this, basically saying: "We don't trust you with our democracy."

I specify "non-work" because we use G Suite for pretty much everything at work, so I just go along with using Chrome, most of the time (although, upon discovering that corporate admin hasn't blocked me front installing Firefox, I immediately installed it and do occasionally use it).

I've been trying to use Brave as my main non-work browser for a while, just to see what I think of it. It's a lot faster than Firefox on mobile, but it's still a flaming piece of trash on Linux desktop.

@Greg Dang, that sucks. We found a Kal-Tire in the city that'll do it...it's the same one that does big rig trucks, so they've got the space for it.
Once we get the new tires on their I can finally practice driving the whole rig...pulling wheelies in the stadium parking lot when there are no events going on, so I won't be a total fool when we're at a campground.

@Greg Also, it seems odd to me that the RV place wouldn't want to be a one-stop service shop. Even if they opt not to sell tires, but still install them for people who bring them in, you know? Like, the mechanic who works on my car doesn't sell tires, but he absolutely installs them.

@Greg Oh, for sure, but some of the tire shops in the city would have to change big RV tires in the parking lot, which seems...impractical. Luckily, my trailer is only 13ft, so not much bigger than a car (smaller than some cars, even). Hopefully, this will mean I can go to the place up the road and not a location out in the boonies.

LOL @ the RV service centre not doing tires. I figured this would be the easiest option, since they'd sell trailer tires, specifically. But, nope, they just send people to Kal tire, which would probably be able to do small trailers like mine, but I can't imagine is set up for gigantic RVs....most of those tire places aren't especially large.

@ShaunBartone This is weirdly hot for May, but has seemingly become the norm in the summer (worst is that it usually coincides with wildfire season, so the hottest days are the ones where it's the least enjoyable to be outside). I've long resisted air conditioning, but feel like I might need to look into it when I replace my furnace (which is on its last legs...I'm surprised it lasted the whole winter).

It's going to be over 30 degrees today. I really wish I had a little fan at my desk. I should have run out last night and tried to find out. I've made a terrible mistake.

@clifstan
That's the other thing...it varies by province. I'm pretty sure is in the hundreds of dollars in Alberta, but I admit it's been a long time since I looked. Maybe I'd be pleasantly surprised.

@galacticstone This is true. Even worse is that the Canadian system is actually pretty mediocre compared to other parts of the world, from what I understand. It's just that the US system is so bad that we feel all smug by comparison.

@June Haha, yes, I plan to practice first. There's a large parking lot near my house that is usually pretty empty, so I'll go there sometime.

@June No parking assist, but I do have backup sensors and I definitely want to figure out how to disable them while towing. I mean, it's not really a problem when I'm driving, but I definitely don't need that shrill beeping while I'm trying to back a trailer into a campsite, especially the first few times, when I won't have a ton of experience.

@June That does sound a lot easier. And I am looking forward to it, honestly. I'm just slightly overwhelmed because I have no idea what I'm doing, having never actually towed a trailer before. Once we sort out the tires, we'll do some short trips close to the city, just to get the hang of it, I think.
