About moderation, IMHO it's pretty good, but you have to judge instances individually.
You wouldn't judge the web by a single website, you can't judge Mastodon by a single instance. There are literally thousands of instances!
Decentralisation lets human beings moderate in a way that is appropriate for their community.
For example, some instances might avoid politics, others might embrace it, others might be indifferent, but they will make these policies clear on their About page.

The moderators of mastodon.social - including me - fielded one thousand reports between 4 PM US Eastern yesterday and 5 PM US Eastern today. I'm /pretty/ sure that's the longest queue I've seen since I started moderating there in May of last year.

Interesting to hear this perspective, someone else posted just a few days ago about how much the relays are needed as they started an instance but didn't want to follow thousands of people.
I guess as long as features are optional and instances federate, there's room for all kinds of needs/tastes on here.

Yes, this is a common problem.
People are so used to totally centralised social media sites, it's like they don't even realise anything else is possible.
The analogy I use to try and spread the word about decentralisation is the phone network:
Whatever country you're in, whatever phone company you're on, you can call anyone else anywhere by just dialing their number, because all the phone networks talk to each other.
