Just wondering, do we mean the same timeline?
By "federated timeline" I meant the one that includes content from all instances, which scrolls impossibly fast, several messages a second.
The local timeline (that just covers your own instace) is great and should definitely stay prominent.

Sure, I'm not saying get rid of the timeline, just make it less prominent due to its potentially confusing/offensive nature.
Power users would know where to find it if it was in one of the menus, for example, and they would know how to pin it open.

Good point, the federated timeline is a bit useless nowdays anyway due to the sheer number of users. Even if you see something interesting, it will scroll away before you can find it. And as you say it's potentially very offensive due to its unfiltered nature.
Perhaps a hashtag subscription channel might be more useful, with the federated timeline moved to a less prominent position?

I've tried to use it myself as much as possible.
The email network is another good analogy, we never worry about sending email to people on another provider.

There's an important psychological privacy feature in federation: if your users can switch to another instance without leaving the network, an instance admin is less likely to abuse their power.
A big part of the reason Facebook, Twitter, Google etc do what they do is because they think users have no real choice but to accept their terms and conditions.
If e.g. FB was forced to federate, it would lose a lot of users with each privacy breach.

Great to see so many new people trying #Mastodon :blobcheer:
Most common barrier for them seems to be the interface, but this could perhaps be made much easer with a single tweak of the Mastodon UI: allow a double-width home column, either optionally or as default.
Twitter has several columns like Mastodon, but the main feed is wider so it's always clear which column is which. There's a sense of focus that Masto lacks.
Has this been proposed? If not, can someone propose it?

By their very nature, GPS tracking services will know where you are and where you've been, so the data they record can be particularly sensitive.
