"Due to the Corona crisis it is clear that events like the FOSSASIA Summit cannot be run in the usual way with large crowds"

No kidding. This wasn't obvious a month ago when the #FOSSASIA blog was saying the conference would proceed as normal?
@watch fediverse.network isn't showing me any instances lists at all. This has been the case for a few days now. Also, I notice there are a few links out-of-date (eg switching.social is now switching.software
@switchingsoftware )
@lightone I can't take credit for that last one. Did you find #RavenVale @liaizon or @ericbuijs ?
I hope this wakes some people up to how risky it is to rely on global supply chains for so much of our food. We're more than capable of feeding ourselves from our own #bioregions if we get organized to do so.

I haven't seen a supermarket looking so understocked since the #Christchurch earthquakes.

> You could imagine servers being pure data API endpoints and the GUI being handled locally
For sure. I touched on another way to think about it here:

What it comes down to is that #Javascript is an excellent way for newbie developers to make their code run on other people's computers without having to pass any of the security review it would require to be installed natively. Which is exactly as bad as it sounds ;)
@clacke
This is something that both local governments and ride-sharing #PlatformCooperatives can push for, by sharing the costs of developing a #FreeCode software stack for running ride-sharing services. Ideally one that allows users to download vendor-neutral apps, that can connect with a range of services available wherever they are, over a common protocol. This could include public transport, taxis, and ride-hailing and car-sharing services.
Using a web browser without an add-on that can block trackers and malware (eg #uBlockOrigin), or #MakeJavascriptOptional (eg #NoScript), is like using #WindowsXP without an antivirus and a malware scanner.
@dublinux like most of Mastodon's toxicity-avoidance design decisions, this breaks UX for legitimate users much more often than it slows down Bad Actors, who just hack around it. The crippled hashtag search is a classic example. Bad Actors can just use a different fediverse app that has the fully functional hashtag search Gargron wanted to implement, but Mastodon users trying to find new friends with common interests are trapped on their own instance. Everybody loses.

This post on the #Jami blog highlights some of the ways users have to manage #P2P apps differently from those that depend on servers:

From what I'm hearing from people in neighbouring provinces, walking and grocery shopping is all you can do, even there. Everything is closed except grocery stores (and maybe pharmacies?) and public transport is severely limited.

For good reason ;) Perhaps Session offers something not possible with non-blockchain chat P2P like #Jami and #Tox apps, or the many existing #blockchain-based social media projects:

But the burden of proof is definitely on them.
A lot of the OS work for the #PinePhone has been built on top of work done for both #UbuntuPhone and the #Librem5, such as #Phosh:

This is one advantage of developing software as a #commons.
... for December 22 that is. Also, happy new year to everyone in the darkened northern hemisphere, and to those using north-centric calendars in the sunnier southern hemisphere :)
