in a way systemd already assimilated PAM; there is pam_systemd.so

i'm just over here wondering why people insist on loading a bunch of glorified ROP gadgets in their programs just to authenticate users

    In 1995, Sun invented PAM.

This has made a lot of people very angry and been widely regarded as a bad move.

an idea I have been mulling around for a while would be to write a PAM wrapper library that just uses BSDAuth.

oh, I misread your question. the answer is to write a module for MySQL that uses BSDAuth.

i will add it to my ever growing todo list.

alternatively, sysadmins should use distributions that know better than to use PAM, such as OpenBSD or Alpine

Overall I agree but sometimes it's best to sell a business before it crashes. For example Netscape sold to AOL to save everyone's retirement accounts.

Rather than congratulate a person for selling their company, I will extend my condolences to the 95% of the staff, that just had their good job receive its death warrant.

    Been there done that.

I remember when AT&T launched u-verse 10 years ago, they ran ads that were basically a bunch of suits in a "big cable" meeting room talking about ways to jack up your bill.

i remember people liking those ads because it really hit home to cable customers that felt they were being screwed over (because they were).

of course, AT&T was trying to sell VDSL2 as "fiber" so they weren't really being 100% honest either. but i haven't ever really gotten any bill shock with my AT&T bill while i did constantly get bill shock with Cox (it just kept going up and up), so at least their billing is honest, and now they actually are putting in fiber lol

oh yes, with comcast it would definitely be intentional.

i've talked with them on the phone before, they're sneaky and will try to sell you things you already have again.

if comcast charged somebody more than once for an HBO subscription, i wouldn't honestly be surprised by it

My main issue with Telegram's ICO plans are this:

    1. Unless it's in a stable and reliable way to some degree (ie. I pay Apple for a phone, they give me a phone and services without privacy-degrading bullshit attached), I don't want capitalism in my digital shit, especially anything social. That's a whole load of badness waiting to happen. One of the reasons Mastodon is so great is that nobody is trying to turn a profit.

    2. fuck cryptocurrency

    one note about #UseStrongPasswords.

it should be about using passphrases; not passwords.

actual phrases have more entropy and are more easily remembered.
