I bottled my first mead. It had been almost 7 weeks, and the airlock was still bubbling sluggishly, but I wanted to free up the vessel for other projects so I just pasteurized these to stop the fermentation. There was about 12 oz left over which I drank last night. It had kind of a yeasty aftertaste, but it was pretty good. I'm looking forward to trying it after it's aged for a few more months and the yeast has finished settling out. Waiting is going to be hard.
After 3 days fermenting in the jug it was good tasting but sickly sweet. I don't really drink sweet beverages, so if you're one to guzzle colas or sweet tea you might like it just fine, but for me it was a bit much. A day conditioning in bottles got it nice and sparkling, and burned off a little more of the sugar, but it was still a little too sweet for my tastes. I refilled the jug with water and this time added 200g of sugar (vs 350 the first time) and let it go for a second run. I just bottled that, and tasted a little bit of it. Overall it's much mellower. I'll have to wait and see what it's like tomorrow after it's carbonated and chilled. I also started a second fresh batch with 200g of sugar that I added cloves to. I tasted a bit of that as well and the clove flavor definitely comes through. I'm not sure if I like it more with or without.
The kid got a Primaris Invictor War Suit that I'm helping him put together. This is the first time I've had to decorate a large base. I figured for scale it should really look like it's towering over something, so I slapped together a quick ruined wall from foam board. I think it looks pretty good for 15 minutes work.
I've had a Tracfone for maybe a year now, and every once in a while I get a strange blitz of emails and texts that are all "oh shit, your service is about to expire, better renew it now!" even though I have automatic renewal set up. It's only weird to me because it doesn't happen every month, or even every other month, but maybe 3 times this past year. WTF?
I drank the testers of the cherry and ginger-lime ciders. They were both not very good. I've learned that a little citrus goes a long way and can easily be overpowering. I'll need to keep trying/tweaking. Luckily they have a pretty fast turn-over.
They definitely deliver on the booze though. Woof.
Hot sauce finished and bottled. Home grown Fresno chilis, fermented 6 weeks. It's not murderous, but it has some kick (and lots of garlic). I'm going to be gifting it for Christmas mostly, so I need a pithy name for the label.
Cranberry cider take 2. I used filtered apple juice instead of pressed cider, and cranberry juice instead of craisins. It's much less milky, nicer color, and a bit drier. I'll let it bottle condition for a while and then probably save it for Christmas.
I just learned about tepache, and I had to give it a try. It's a traditional Mexican drink, made from the fermented rind and core of the pineapple, with some added sugar and spices. Naturally fermented and low alcohol. More of a soda than a beer. It's only supposed to take a few days, so I'll be able to tell if it's any good fairly soon. As a bonus, I get to eat a ton of fresh pineapple.
Remember this, kids, the next time you get upset about creators "injecting politics" into your favorite fictional franchise: All fiction is political. If you don't see it it's just because you've internalized the politics being presented.
Today was the first I've heard of the allegations against Cas Anvar and his expulsion from the cast of The Expanse. His portrayal of Alex Kamal has been incredible, and a big part of making the show as good as it is. It's a real shame that he's a turd in real life. I hope the final season of the show doesn't suffer for his shitbaggery.
In different but related news, I found this blog post. While being horribly organizted/written, it puts forward a pretty interesting explanation about Amos' unique psychology by attributing it to a combination of autism and C-PTSD. I'm not an expert in either of those things, but it tracks well with what I know of the character's backstory from the books and novellas, and certainly fits the facts better than sociopathy.
The most disappointing thing for me about the news that the series will be cut short at 6 seasons is we'll most likely miss seeing Amos' final evolution, which was one of the most surprising developments in the latter part of the series. Book readers will know what I'm talking about.
I'd say in terms of the TV adaptation, Drummer comes in at a solid number 2 for me. It's hard to predict exactly where her arc is going, as she's kind of a blend of (book) Drummer, Michio Pa, and a dash of Bull de Baca, and at least two of those people go in fairly different directions in the books. Regardless, I think she's a joy to watch and Cara Gee does a great job with the role.
I'm getting excited for Season 5, now less than a month out. I might actually get to see it before the world collapses. Anyway, Amos is my favorite character (from a cast of really good characters) and while I don't agree 100% with this analysis, I think it mostly tracks.
My Logitech USB headset has died after 5 years of faithful service (and 9 months of recent intense use). Does anyone have recommends for a good, comfortable (and inexpensive) replacement?
