    @DistroJunkie it really is, but I'm continuing to work towards saving what little privacy I have by gritting rid of services like Google where possible.

    Really interesting read for those interested in #Privacy, or those that aren't for that matter. I particularly like the comments around the "I've got nothing to hide" justification.

    @mike not get called out?

    FYI - I'm On-call for the US holiday, and guess what, I'm stuck on a call. 😢

    @iah sorry, it's actually @kevq on wire, not @kev.

    @ivan that's certainly a possibility, although my rationale was to allow people to use their fosstodon.org handle.

    @ivan they won't be able to send from the addresses, just receive. I think it will be a purely opt in service though (if I do it).

    @iah yeah, pretty much. I reserved "@kev" as my handle, just in case it blows up. I doubt it will though, unfortunately.

    @iah I have wire on my phone, but I don't really use it to be honest. It's basically another signal/telegram type app.

    @porus no, I'm saying that for encryption to work, BOTH parties need to be using it. It's a fundamental part of encryption.

    @porus one without the other is useless. Either is better than nothing, but full e2e encryption is required if you want to claim something is secure.

    What's the point in encrypting something on a device if it's going to be transmitted (and therefore easily intercepted) in plain text?

    @porus yup, thought I was right, this is taken from their site: “Protect your communication in transit and on your phone. Silence (formerly SMSSecure) is a full replacement for the default text messaging application: all messages are encrypted locally and messages to other Silence users are encrypted over the air.”

    So it only encrypts locally, which again is pointless as most modern phones are encrypted anyway. Only encrypt ed in transit when recipient is using the app also.

    The more I use Mastodon, the more I'm really enjoying it. It's probably 80% of my time on social networks now.

      Fosstodon is a Mastodon instance that is dedicated to Free & Open Source Software, or FOSS as many call it. Fosstodon is for people who are interested in open source technology and the awesome community around it. Whether that be Linux, open source software like Firefox, or Mastodon itself. If you're interested in technology, Fosstodon is a great place to start.

    @wion absolutely, it is a gradual process. I don't think I will be self-hosting many of the tools. I self-hosted my email server for a year or so, it was so much work.

    I'm definitely prioritising vendors over self-hosting, but if I can't find a moral vendor, or functionality is a problem, I'll look at self-hosting. Still no dice? Then I'll be sticking with Google for that tool until something does pop up.

    @daan I suppose the good thing is that you don't have to call your instance Mastodon, or even a play on words. Your instance if your instance, it just uses mastodon.

    Kinda like a blog using WordPress. WordPress isn't the name of the blog, but the blog uses WordPress.
