@DistroJunkie it really is, but I'm continuing to work towards saving what little privacy I have by gritting rid of services like Google where possible.
Really interesting read for those interested in #Privacy, or those that aren't for that matter. I particularly like the comments around the "I've got nothing to hide" justification.
@porus yup, thought I was right, this is taken from their site: “Protect your communication in transit and on your phone. Silence (formerly SMSSecure) is a full replacement for the default text messaging application: all messages are encrypted locally and messages to other Silence users are encrypted over the air.”
So it only encrypts locally, which again is pointless as most modern phones are encrypted anyway. Only encrypt ed in transit when recipient is using the app also.
@wion absolutely, it is a gradual process. I don't think I will be self-hosting many of the tools. I self-hosted my email server for a year or so, it was so much work.
I'm definitely prioritising vendors over self-hosting, but if I can't find a moral vendor, or functionality is a problem, I'll look at self-hosting. Still no dice? Then I'll be sticking with Google for that tool until something does pop up.
@daan I suppose the good thing is that you don't have to call your instance Mastodon, or even a play on words. Your instance if your instance, it just uses mastodon.
Kinda like a blog using WordPress. WordPress isn't the name of the blog, but the blog uses WordPress.
