Note, ANY user can generate an invite link. Just go to https://fosstodon.org/invites to generate a temporary link. So if you want people to sign up, you can still allow them to. Sorry guys.
Unfortunately, because we have received a fairly large number of bots signing up in the last few hours (approximately 50), we have had to disable signing up for the time being.
@mike and I will monitor to see how things go, but we need a better long-term solution really. Unfortunately, #Mastodon doesn't seem to have one yet. 😞
The signup page now looks like this. I really don't like it, but it's all we can do at this point.
@brandon I'm not sure I agree. In my experience, knowledge has always trumped certificates. Anyone can learn answers to questions, but that's different to truly understanding the content.
For example, I was told the other day that the CISO for the REALLY large company I work for doesn't have a degree.
@joseph could it not be an issue your side? I obviously don't know, but with numerous products being unreliable for you, could the issue be your connection/machine?
@ignitionigel@joseph an alternative (if you're willing to spend a little cash) could be a Synology. You don't need a big, fancy one (I have a 4 disk, they're not cheap). You could get a single disk one, which still has all the features on the OS.
You can then use their photo app on the NAS, and android app, which auto-uploads, just like nextcloud. I used it for years, it's rock solid.
Backups - USB disk hanging out the back, or auto-backup to amazon glacier (very small cost)
