My reasons as to why I choose not to use Solus lay in my personal experience of the projects history.
I am not bashing the quality of the projects, that is consistantly good, however the stability and the potential logevity of the projects should raise eyebrows.
Long story short the (talented) lead dev has a history of jumping ship or leaving projects, (and users) high and dry.
LMDE (left2011), SolusOS1(2012) Eveline (abandoned2013 ), EvolveOS (2014?), Solus (left 2018).
As the lead Dev has now recently left Solus as a project I am yet to reform my opinion of the project.

My only issue with gentoo is the amount of time recompling updates takes.
although there are some nice gains to be made by using gentoo, about 6 years ago I ran both Sabayon and calculate-linux for a while

I think MicroSoft are in a deep state of Extend. They have embraced by showing they ♥ Linux by buying influence into the heart of community by becoming a Linux Foundation Board member, and have also won the hearts of the community by purchasing GitHub, a resource that many open source projects hold dear. In addition yo this they joined OIN.
They are now in the extend game, first they create SphereOS that can only be developed on windows, are able to offer/propose developers (developers, developers. .. ) new tools on github, and have a version of Linux in their appstore, additionally they also have access to all of IBM and RedHats patents via the OIN...
I think the Extinguish phase will be different to that of the past they will♥Linux soo much they will smother it and win the hearts and minds of developers as they do so.
Looks to me that Microsoft are attempting to remove the NECESSITY for a seperate Linux OS.
if you remove the NECESSITY for a Linux OS provide a single familiar target for developers to create Electron Apps for.

This is evidence another step on the path of NextGenEEE™
They have publicly embraced Linux, now they are extending linux to be used with their proprietary OS.
Look out for vender lockdown next

Yeah, I know, but this is for @kev 😁
Its still seems an odd version though as AFAIK the actively maintained long term kernels are 4.14, 4.9, 4.4 and 3.16, so eOS using 4.15 seems odd, although I think it was the first kernel to include the retpoline fixes for meltdown and spectre.

Current kernel for me is 4.18.16 on Arch 😀

While you note some good future options they are at this time vapour, at least they are in the UK.
FirefoxOS, BackberryOS (QNX) and Tizen were all in this position and their moment passed by.
Without the support of mobile phone retailers it appears we may be stuck in a 2 horse race until Google drop Android, it will be then that a chance to seize market share.
The fact remains there are no affordable readily available mainstream alternatives to Android or iOS
Perhaps KaiOS (the closed source bastard son of FirefoxOS) will become an option
I kinda miss nokia's symbian firmware (remember when it was opensourced.... then closed again)
And it also appears nothing has been done with the now opensourced WebOS
I say good luck to @kev nd hope iOS works for him.

@kev
Which Distro is that?
Kernel 4.15.0-38, that's OLD!?
Did you mess up your GRUB/bootloader?
@rik
-
@timapple
Without explicitly naming the distros I will confirm that
The first one I was heavily involved in and personal history with, which ended badly, while it is a good distro I have moved on
The second one has a Dev with a history of dropping the mic and leaving projects so I don't trust the longevity of those projects.

Did you let @AndrzejL prepare your food if drink?....
I have a 3.5 yr old android phone, with most google apps disabled, for a while before this phone I had a iPhone4s, which was without doubt the worst phone I have ever had.
So while I want to get rid of android, there is no affordable, suitable alternative at this time (in the uk).
Yes there are niche firmwares based on android, but that does not solve the Issue.
The future looks better with the likes of the various linux based phones, but unless a uk retailer gets in on that action, its always gonna be a fringe option.
These days I pretty much only use google play as my source for films, seeing as I gave up shivering me timbers about 3yrs ago
I think that you are right to give Apple a try and hope it works for you.

A sad fact:
The only reason why google exists as they do today is because we gifted them to become so .

OpenBSD is a good OS, I have used it in the past, if I were to switch to a BSD it be the one I most likely switch to.
