@Algot More like Patreon than Kickstarter. Don't know if there's anything I already like doing that people would also pay me money for, though.

@Algot I mean, I could easily offer these projects as kits for people to assemble, and put the design drawings online. Probably won't make a cent on it, though.

@Algot Well, they are random in the sense that I make whatever I feel like making, and aren't always of interest to others. I think the one I'm making now is a great idea and would be useful to many gamers, but interest here on Mastodon has been limited. It's always limited. I get more faves and boosts on my opinion/joke toots than on my project toots.

I mean, I've seen a couple of people with Liberapay accounts that are almost on that level, but I don't imagine that they're getting much money that way.
Yes, it would be kind of awesome to get money just for being me, but people tend to want something in return for their money, and I don't think shitposts, photos of my cat, political rants, dad jokes and random circuit boards are it.

I wonder how much money I'd actually get if I simply set up a recurring donation page that reads "I make software and electronics and toot a lot on Mastodon. Send money, please."

@CobaltVelvet Is my ISP being weird, or is there a DNS issue with octodon.social? The host resolves on the cellphone network but not on my home connection. Other Internet hosts seem to resolve fine.

One of the hardest parts of starting a business is to create the impression that you are a sustainable business, and not just a group of people pretending to be a business.
Many of the companies I've worked for were only pretending. I didn't know at the time, but whenever I worked in such a business, there was always a gut feeling that the work wasn't worthwhile.
Most of them have since shut down, and the few that didn't are barely staying afloat, despite being around for decades.

Intelligent people are also very good at self-deception, often making up elaborate stories in order to justify their actions.
It's useful to have honest friends who are also intelligent in such cases, because they can see straight through all of that, and confront you with the truth.
The line between a truthful remark and a hurtful one is very thin.

I have very few friends who dare to see straight through my talk and tell me what they really think.
It would seem that what I've been doing for the past few months is avoiding shit I don't feel like doing, like submitting a stack of job applications, or taking a job I don't want to make ends meet.
My friend pointed out that intelligent people are usually very lazy and very cunning about it, and will go to great lengths to avoid doing actual hard work.

This is the kind of problem where, if you ask a guy with a Cisco certification about it, he'll shrug because he only works with corporate networks, and then there's nobody else to ask, because nobody makes a living from setting up networks where UPnP and IPTV have to coexist, since that's a situation you rarely find outside of home networks.

My smart switches can serve as queriers, but I'm not sure if this is necessary if my routers have IGMP proxies. I'm also not sure if any special configuration is required to make the IGMP proxies play ball with SSDP, since my impression was that the IGMP proxy is only there to forward external multicast traffic to the internal network.

"If IGMP snooping is enabled on a switch, or more commonly a wireless router/switch, it will interfere with UPnP/DLNA device discovery (SSDP) if incorrectly or incompletely configured (e.g. without an active querier or IGMP proxy), making UPnP appear unreliable."
I'm having issues with SSDP on my Philips Hue bridge and I have ZyXEL smart switches and Mikrotik routers with IGMP proxies (configured for IPTV), and I'm not sure how to make it all work properly.

Interesting convo snippet about GDPR from a software company CEO I know:
- Can't a US developer implement GDPR compliant code?
- Basically no. He can work on code used in the EU without touching the data, or by using fake data, or the customer can opt to export the data to the US so he can work on it, but the end user must then be made fully aware of this. Both are expensive and a hassle, and make it more attractive to just use developers in the EU.

Every company should be legally obliged to hire a guy whose sole job is to laugh like a mad villain whenever a particularly devious business plan is hatched.
Hahahaha.... yeees... hahahaha... MUHAAA HAA HAA HAHAHAHAHAAAAAA!
*CEO sweats and pulls sleve* Okay, so maybe we won't be doing that.

This guy had to fight his bank for 8 years after a known criminal took up a mortgage in his name. There was plenty of evidence for identity theft, including an admission from the scammer himself, who was on the run. The bank didn't care about any of this and kept pursuing the case.
In my opinion, the bank targeted the victim because the perpetrator was gone. The greedy bastards wanted their money back, and pursuing the victim had the highest chance of success.

If Mastodon goes mainstream, all the racist uncles will set up instances for themselves, and unlike on Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg won't be able to do anything about those fake news stories.
I kind of hope Mastodon stays low on the radar.
