Your help is much appreciated: if in my repo, you find an app that doesn't work / is broken, please report it (via the repo's GitLab tracker at https://gitlab.com/IzzyOnDroid/repo, here at Mastodon or by mail) – I cannot check them all by myself.

Similarly, if you miss an app that should be there and meets the repo's criteria: let me know, I'll take a look and usually include it.

Oh: same goes for my app listings, GitLab tracker at https://gitlab.com/IzzyOnDroid/applists

    Thanks! And boosts welcome :awesome:

Thing is, you're literally trying to limit our free speech and freedom of association.

We don't want our app associated with Nazis if we can help it. That's our choice.
Then if people want to, or don't want to, associate themselves with us because of the decision we made that's entirely up to them, and completely okay.

There is no such thing as a neutral party. We don't need a central repository of blocklists, but a decentralised (potentially federated) way for users, admins, and developers to all choose what is welcome in the fediverse and what is not.

Not sure why you keep assuming authoritarian intent. I am not requiring anything of devs. I am just expressing my disappointment in the choices of some devs, and my applause and support as a user to the choices of other devs.

@fuzzylynx @fedilab @Tusky @codewiz @mayel One wonders: if servers didn't implement blocking, and someone started implementing blocking, would we be having the same conversation about that feature? Freezepeach and "it's not an instance admin's role to decide for users..."

So Gab has decided that their own code that they spent $5M of investor money developing is so unsalvageably bad that they're going to use Mastodon's code instead, with the added bonus of leeching off of our apps (with Gab apps being banned from app stores)

This is an early warning to fellow admins to be vigilant and domain-block them on sight, when/if they appear (unconfirmed whether they intend to federate), and to app devs to consider if blocking Gab's domains from their app is necessary.

Apps could implement something akin to adblockers, where users can subscribe to several blocklists curated by the community. And apps (whether client or server) and server admins could preconfigure defaults, just like extensions like uBlock Origin do.

Things free-software actually needs a replacement for, rather than more Alexa clones:

    - the thing that remembers your wifi networks & passwords across Android devices

    - the thing in GMail that notices "due dates" and creates optional reminders for them

    - The thing that notices when email & SMS contacts have the same name and provides a button to merge them

    - Yours?

Curious to hear more about your designs. I think adblockers are a good example of shared block lists actually working. Of course would be good to have a federated way to subscribe to people's block lists.

This isn't a "freeze peach" argument; I think it's *perfectly acceptable* to block other instances for having hate speech etc. What I'm saying is: it won't scale. We need another design for the long term.

Such designs exist; @emacsen and I are writing up some text, and I plan to write up some code. I realize in the meanwhile, blocklists are doing a better job than nothing. I just would like to do better.

We need anti-abuse systems, but it's impossible for instance blocklists to scale to the size the fediverse needs to grow. It's mostly working for now but won't long term.

Easy demonstration: imagine everyone self hosts, and that self hosting becomes trivial. Everyone agrees that's a good goal, right? (If you don't, maybe you don't really want the fediverse?)

In that case, it's trivial to make new instances, meaning already-overloaded administrators will be overwhelmed with "swatting flies".

"Civil rights groups have called it “perhaps the most dangerous surveillance technology ever developed”, and called for Amazon to stop selling it to government agencies, particularly police forces."

"Mr Vogels doesn’t feel it's Amazon’s responsibility to make sure Rekognition is used accurately or ethically.

“That’s not my decision to make,” he tells me."

Murky AF. I guess this kind of moral self-absolution is a necessity if you're in charge of Amazon.

@kensanata @cj bingo. This is how I view F/LOSS. I think it's impractical to teach everyone how to code (to a degree of recompiling software) but allowing for total control over how something works is more viable and will force developers and designers to think with this in mind
