Im still writing a blog post about ethics in software, and how that relates to Open Source Software and Free Software.

One thing I am stuck on is how Free Software's ethics implicitly relies on the assumption that "all users have the technical literacy to modify and run software". And I use literacy to truly mean a fundamental capability that should be taught to everyone, because Free Software assumes "the user" can "modify" said software in order to satisfy it's ethics.

I don't like this flaw

@cwebber @emsenn @alcinnz @eliotberriot I am still interested in the idea of decentralized standards bodies federating specs with each other. This seems like a good concrete use case for me to think on.

@darius In general, algorithms that are targeted to the user's actual need rather than conversions (however defined by the vendor). The commercial version of an algorithm is, almost by definition, "here is the thing that will make us money that we think we can trick you into being interested in."

What heretical software features can you imagine that would never fly at a growth oriented company but could totally work on free open source social media?

For example, algorithmic timelines are one way to deal with information overload. But what if instead your software offered suggestions for people to unfollow (this person posts a lot and you hardly ever interact with them)? Not necessarily a good idea but it's an idea we could implement that would NEVER happen on Twitter, Facebook, etc

It's important to add alt texts on images you post, so screen reader users know what is in them.

You can do this on Mastodon by clicking on "Describe for the visually impaired" after attaching an image.

Land ownership is a tool of oppression across the globe

@brainblasted @catonano Co-option of the term "free speech" scares me when by those who want to be allowed themselves to speak on all platforms but who are are more than willing to threaten people who speak in ways that they believe are oppositional to their own views. So-called FSEs are not consistent, and it's ok and even good for communities to define their own boundaries.

The muddying of the waters is also dangerous because free speech is one of the few defenses against fascism we have.

France's largest free software organisation @Framasoft has just launched a crowdfunding campaign for an open federated events tool, Mobilizon:

Mobilizon would replace Facebook Events and similar closed services.

It would use ActivityPub, so people would be able to organise events on the Fediverse.
