Hey #Fediverse, are you aware of any free software alternatives to https://toggl.com/ ? I need something that will help me track the time I spend on various endeavours.
It's zero secret that Twitter, Vine, Insta were built on the backs of P.O.C. labour. It's zero secret that Masto was built on the backs of queer labour. I'm not talking devving, I'm talking our participation in this space.
That LABOUR was predicated on the lack (or disenfranchisement) of communities and networks locally, on our being deprived normative systems of love and support, directing us into sites of labour where our WORK to find and speak to each other can be captured and commodified.
You are invited to #Funkwhale's first General Assembly, on May 19th, 6PM (UTC+2). This is a critical milestone to officially launch our collective, and we'd like as much participants as possible!
It's open to anyone, and the meeting itself will be text-based, so book the slot in your calendar, and come join us!
#framasoft is an organisation that works on education, development, funding and hosting of #freesoftware.
For their hosting they have their own software stack, and branded them as frama...
For every service they offer, they explain what software they have used to do so. They do this also when they changed parts of the code and when they have their own branding.
Sometimes they also help to fund the development as they did for #peertube.
Hacking on the Friend Camp fork of Mastodon is so fun. I'm currently rendering Article activitypub posts inline and working on a way to get inline images both looking nice and proxied locally so user IPs aren't exposed externally.
The attached image is from a write.as blog post I made with inline images. I'll probably do like Pleroma does and collapse all Articles behind their "title" in the style of a CW.
side-note: we need to have a serious audit / checklist of the authz + authn of the options we have for the #indieweb / #fediverse so we can give new projects / dev GOOD suggestions
There is a new Boostrap-based UI but I can't comment on its usability. Of course instances can customise or create their own themes. Still, its old technology...
We have some exciting news! The team at Purism are thrilled to announce the launch of Librem One https://librem.one Private and secure email, chat, social and VPN. #LibremOne
We initially hoped that improvements/features could flow between Pleroma<>CommonsPub<>MoodleNet. But the codebases ended up diverging much more than expected. They might converge again in the future though...
Techie friends: if you haven’t started using Mosh (vs SSH) yet, you should. The short version is that it’s SSH over UDP, so it’s connectionless and you don’t get disconnected whenever your IP changes (like you walk into work and your phone jumps from LTE to Wi-Fi) or your laptop goes to sleep. It also has much better interactive latency, especially on slow mobile networks. “The user pressed ‘A’ and isn’t in Vim’s command mode. I’ll display a proposed ‘A’ then unless the server tells me not to.”
One easy way to do this would be to make the choosing of a server more obvious during the setup of Riot, rather than just defaulting to matrix.org. In 99.9% of cases users will just go with whatever the default is.
If you were impacted by the #matrix outage please consider standing up a Synapse instance and help decentralize. I've been running one for a couple of weeks and it is stable, low-maintenance software so far.
