I haven't followed the Google hearing thing closely at all but I did see someone mention that a Congressperson asked Pichai to explain why Google image searches for "idiot" came up with the result they do.

I usually use DDG but for this I went and checked Google Images and... 🤣

(Food words *and* the food, obviously, though some of the recipes are very Tex-Mex in authenticity levels. Wich-Syr?)

Also I screwed up my pumpkin-spice joke because kibbeh nayeh is raw, and kibbeh *sahneh* is when you bake it with househ filling (i.e. Mediterranean meatloaf).

Outside of food words I speak no Arabic, and obviously I'm not even that great with the food words. Wichita had an influx of refugees from the Ottoman invasion of Syria about a hundred years ago, and food words are most all that is left of the Arabic in the current generation, so I can't even guarantee I received the right pronunciation.

So I was trying to remember the name of a Mediterranean restaurant near me and I absently typed "!map Mediterranean" into the Firefox bar and then stared at it in confusion for a moment.

@weemadhamish I found a place that does, and also once sampled mine (made from home-ground beef) before baking it into nayeh and was like HOW CAN YOU SIMPLY MIX RAW MEAT AND WHEAT AND HAVE IT COME OUT SO MAGICAL?!

@Gargron @trini @staticsafe @brennen I was *so* disappointed when I saw the Joys all over the supermarkets here, went "A MISTAKE MUST HAVE HAPPENED I BETTER GRAB THESE BEFORE THE LAW FINDS OUT" and discovered it wasn't the same thing.

Right now they have Star Wars themed ones and I'm sure they're neat but I still need some time to process my disappointment.

New Jersey had a landmark civil-rights ruling/legislation awhile back, that basically just says municipalities don't get to *all* say "not here, live next door" and any additional housing stock (or jobs, apparently?) requires a certain percentage of affordable units, period.

Which is good: ironically the chief argument Patti is making is that alllll that concentrated low-income housing down by the train station is a problem.

So it's that time of year again, where we contemplate the possibility of attending either the Philly or NYC Thanksgiving Day parade. Carl: "Not sure I'm ready to go to a parade whose attendance is larger than the entire population of Wichita."

Got an email from my late mother, which was a little weird. It was my sister forwarding a response from a Husqvarna dealer, which sis assumed was to do with Mom's Viking 1+ embroidery machine. Turned out it was about a chainsaw and probably intended for another of the people with whom Mom shared first-initial-last-name.

I suspect having my sister notify all senders that "the recipient of these emails has died" will encourage all the *correct* recipients to get their address right next time. 😆

@art I would say "who would take tiny kids to the desert for fun" but my mother used to tell the story about how I loved to run around the desert yelling "HERE, LIZARD! HERE, LIZARD!" so I guess it's not an entirely weird thing. Dad was a big photography nut.

My sister got horrifically car-sick though so we sold the van not too long after she was born (after, as my parents put it, she threw up non-stop from Torrance to Philadelphia and back).

@art My family used to take our old Dodge camper van out there. I have a picture I should scan, of our van parked in the middle of nowhere, me in a playpen on the sand, and Mom standing in the open door holding my infant sister. (Dad's behind the camera.)

@kelbot Yeah, I had some issues with something missing in the alsa install (I should have written everything down) and am kinda thinking I'll blow a clean image onto that SD and start over now that I kinda know how it goes.
