when i joined the Fediverse... early 2017 i think... i remember a certain positivity, a certain constructiveness, a certain idea of getting away from the "perpetual outrage machine" - this is something people on the Fediverse were calling birdsite at the time, believe it or not. even queer people were saying this.

someone told me the other day that The Discourse was as old as the Fediverse itself, but in either case, i'm not getting what i came here for, or thought i was getting originally.

by positivity i don't mean "everything is peachy," i just mean there was more of an assumption of good faith, less blaming and shaming, more interest in solving problems rather than constantly trying to accrue as many boosts as possible by having the hottest take on the latest drama

When reading about ancient Rome, people often marvel about how "modern" the roman state and society were compared to ours.

How about we look at this from the right perspective and realise our society is so incredibly backward we still see a 2000 year old state as "modern"?

I'd personally go for a list of "desired traits" like for instance:

1. Open source
2. Federated
3. Accessible
4. Cross platotrm
Etc...

If two comparable services are proposed, the one checking more boxes in the list is selected.
