@dajbelshaw I've found myself listening to Radio 1 more and more! I think I'm getting younger.

I've always preferred local radio to national, I flick between BBC Leeds, BBC Sheffield and a junk commercial thing called Pulse, but they are all turning into what sound like parodies of local radio.

I don't know how many more years I can guess before I throw the thing out of the window.

What's today's topic on the radio, Stephanie?

"Today, we're going to be taking you back to your school disco, what songs did you have your last dance to?"

What is local radio's obsession with school? It's kind of creepy.

@woozle I love the "in the region of $30" bit. People generally use that phrase to talk about large sums of money ("IBM has bought Apple for a sum in the region of $300 billion"), so it sounds really... odd?

@vfrmedia I keep a prepaid MasterCard for emergencies. It has £50 on it, which is more than enough petrol to get me home from just about anywhere in the UK.

It'll read to the pump as a bank account with £50 in it, and the pump will go "nope, not £99, bugger off." How is that going to work?

@vfrmedia My car doesn't even take £99 of petrol. If I ran it down to totally empty, it'd come to about £45.

Petrol pumps show the last amount purchased on the screen when you get to them. I always wonder what on earth people are driving when see £90+ on the screen.

Asda is also the only place I've ever seen completely unstaffed petrol stations - they just have pumps and card readers.

@vfrmedia Their petrol is maybe... 2-3p a litre cheaper than the other local garages, but my car doesn't seem to go nearly as far on it. I will stick with my usual locally-owned Texaco from now on.

@vfrmedia That happened to me at the same Asda mentioned in the article. Not cool.

@mattcropp "Striminals" is almost as laboured a portmanteau as the "Bremoaners" one that went around a bit after the EU referendum.

That one had a massive FOUR words shoehorned into it - "Britain", "Exit", "Remain", and "Moaners".

@kristiinakello Also, are you the writer of switching.social? I like that you added Posteo (I've been using it for years) but perhaps you might want to add K-9 Mail as an option for an Android client - it's open source and works really well. :)

@kristiinakello I realised who it was after I'd listened for a minute. It's a bloke called "Ditchy" who's been stealing a living from Northern local radio stations for years.

Not sure what we've done to deserve him on our local, but it explains the right-wing rant.

@neil We have a wonderful local station called BCB, but the signal fades just before I get to my house. http://www.bcbradio.co.uk/

@neil Pretty much. We get Heart and Capital, but those are ex-local stations that are now national. There's a bit of overspill from neighbouring areas, but Pulse 1 is the only actually local station unless you count the bible-bashing one.

Each advert break must have at least one ad set in a voiceover session, where the VO simply can't believe the low, low prices of the advertised product, stops the read and has to rush off to buy it *right now*.

Failure to do so will result in an Ofcom fine.

On the radio: "And on today's show we're going to be talking about snowflakes, the killjoys who want to ban things and make everything politically correct, let's shove it in their faces."

That's what you get when The Sun buys your local radio station, kids.
