@dajbelshaw Nice. I always used to get Verso books from the News from Nowhere co-op book shop in Liverpool but I haven't been able to get there for a while. http://www.newsfromnowhere.org.uk/

@ND3JR I'm not sure what's going through RMS' mind, it's not a hill I'd want to die on. The joke shouldn't have been in there in the first place - I assume it was topical at the time but it makes a lot of assumptions that readers know about USA politics and current affairs, which is irrelevant to glibc.
The right thing to do would have been to say "fair enough, get rid of it". Quite why RMS is making it into a massive issue is beyond me.

@ND3JR Bit late for that as the crap joke was written in the 1990s

@ghost_bird The commonest one they do up here in the North is "37.5 hours a week, 8:30-5:30 but with a super long lunch" knowing that they're based on a business park in the arse end of nowhere and you'll work through your super long lunch because there's nowhere else to go.
Being in the union tends to get you first on the list when they want to cut back.

You must assume that every single person works 9am-5pm Monday to Friday followed by a Big Night Out on Friday and Saturday.
Changing work patterns and lifestyles must be ignored. Your radio station should sound like a subspace emission from 1992.
Failure to do so will result in an Ofcom fine.

@ghost_bird I've worked in some right sh*t holes over the years which is why I've started working for myself, even though I'm now dirt poor.
Is it me, or are hours getting much longer for office work now? It always used to be 9-5 but now I see lots of job ads for 9-5:30 or even 8:30-5:30. What's with that?

As technology improves and platforms multiply, you must include every single way your station can be heard, every top-of-the-hour, even when those are just multiple ways of listening to the same platform.
"Online, on 107.7 FM, on DAB digital radio, on your tablet, on your smartphone, on your smart speaker, on your false teeth, blaring from your neighbour's car. This is today's best music mix. 107.7 Balls FM! NEWS."
Failure to do so will result in an Ofcom fine.

Any weather sponsorship credits must include the words "whatever the weather".
As in: "Balls FM weather, powered by John's Carpet Solutions, for all your flooring needs whatever the weather."
Failure to do so will result in an Ofcom fine.

When the temperature outside your studio reaches 0.1 degree C above 20, you must play:
a) Dario G - Sunchyme
b) DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince - SummertimeFailure to do so will result in an Ofcom fine.

When writing a commercial for a carpet shop, you must include a man doing a cod Hispanic accent shouting "Underlay! Underlay!"

@ghost_bird What country are you in? Here in the UK we've had nothing but open-plan offices since I started working 12 years ago. They always spout the same nonsense about collaborative working, but really it's so they can make sure no-one's going to the toilet too much or - shocker - reading a news article.

@ghost_bird From my time working in offices, I understand that a lot of managers have very little to do and use pointless change to justify the time and money spent on employing them.

Why are local radio stations obsessed with "taking you back to your school days"? You can't listen to our local for more than ten minutes without hearing "High School Hits!" or "Hey, who remembers Pogs?"
I would like to leave my school days far, far in the past thanks, Pulse 1.

Apparently there was a bit of a kerfuffle overnight regarding a shit joke in some GNU source code and RMS has been acting like a knob about it.
At least we are able to see the shit jokes in GNU source code. Windows source code might have actual Nazi pamphlets embedded in it and we'd never know.

@devurandom That seems a bit of a non-sequitur. Do they think that people with low phone credit balances will appreciate bad literature more than those with lots of money on their phone?

@dajbelshaw Looks lovely! Galloway is beautiful, and it's an area people race past on the M74 on the rat run to the Highlands. It's so much quieter and all the better for it.

@kristiinakello @Antanicus All I can really feel is sympathy for people who are so paranoid about living in a modern city that they need security to meet them off the Tube.
Our cities are safer, more diverse and more pleasant to spend time in than they've ever been - I feel bad for people who think people are out to get them.
