I would rather have honest conversation with one or two people than algorithmically generated "engagement" content with a hundred people any day.
You're shown content that is designed to make you (personally) react and in so doing provide the network operators with more information about what consistently makes you react. Their algorithms learn more about how to control you with every click you make. The guy next door sees entirely different content based on what makes him react. Nowhere are you provided a choice in what you are shown. The network operators can use this information to sell you anything from toothpaste to presidents. Make no mistake, the algorithms know you better than your wife and children. They know exactly what you're going to do. Any illusion of choice is just that - an illusion. You're following the bread trail they designed and laid out for you.
On the free web we generally show you content that you have chosen to view. That's it. The algorithms are under your control and if you suspect otherwise, you are free dump that site or dump that piece of software and go elsewhere. -

@Nynotna This is a hard sell, but decentralized networks could be capable of providing high levels of engagement due to smaller user communities that are engaged in the niche, which can concentrate variably across instances.
Additionally, the fediverse is not yet subject to promoted content that dominates the feeds of other networks. No ads, no celebrity super accounts, and the brands that are active are usually organic to FOSS, which is a fundamental part of the Free Network.

@lorabe Yeah, he's a super cool guy. I've enjoyed getting to know him at work, and I have no doubt that he is creative and talented. I see a lot of potential in what he's doing, despite how I felt about the film personally.
For all I know, maybe I'm missing a perspective to this movie that other people saw easily. It takes guts to show your stuff to the world. Everyone is a critic.

@Triplefox Thanks, really good food for thought. I'm not looking to put people down. For all I know, this is something friends did for fun, and maybe it seemed funnier in the planning and editing stages.
I just felt like the premise would be better suited to a different script, and the cinematography / visual framing could have been much more theatrical in presentation.

@frankiesaxx Normally, I can tolerate low-brow humor, weird ideas, absurd plot elements, but this was Movie 43 levels of awful.

Watched an indie film made by a new friend, and honestly I hated it. I think I should be honest, but I don't want to be a total asshole.
Maybe strong opinions will strengthen the bond, though.

I will always love Gary Larson's cartoons. The morbid, surreal, absurd humor of it has always made it a pure joy to experience.

@KitRedgrave Probably only feasible if the company is located in the Bay Area. I know a ton of people that live in Oakland and take BART in to SF for work.

@alpacaherder Makes me all the more disappointed that #Diaspora is a part of the FSSN, which seems (I could be wrong) to be the SFLC's alternative to the Conservancy.

@KitRedgrave Oakland is pretty nice, though. And it's likely that you'd probably had a commute that was paid for by a large company.
At least in SF, I see corporate busses make drops all over the city every day of the work week. So there's that.

@Dereckson Like, the virtue is good, but it really has little to do with the company, mission statement, or what he does.
