@msh @porsupah Yep. It used to be that our Conservatives, on average, were still to the left of the average Democrat, since Americans (or at least their politicians) are weird outliers who are to the right of the global norm. That's apparently no longer the case. And our Cons, even if still more liberal than the Republicans, have definitely taken a few pages out of their campaign playbook.

@opendork As a kid: socks and underwear are the worst Christmas gift.
As an adult: Wait, you mean I actually have to buy socks and underwear? Why aren't I getting my annual allotment for Christmas?!

@porsupah The idea that Canada's right wing party* wants a milquetoast Democrat as a leader is pretty funny to me (and a real indictment of Republicans who claim, without irony, that the Democrats are a bunch of pinko commies).
*OK, it's not the party, but just a big supporter/3rd party advertiser, but still.

Listening to a canpol podcast today, a guy who is a big Conservative supporter said they wanted a leader like Pete Buttiegegegeg and I don't know if that is more a commentary on the state of the Conservative Party of Canada or the US Democrats.

@jackdaw_ruiz Will Wright, not Sid Meier. I'm getting the two mixed up since we're talking about both Civ and SimCity.

They took "Krampus" off of Netflix. The public library has many copies, though. None at my local branch, but I can still get a copy for tonight.

Back in the DOS/Win3.1 days, almost all the computer games I had were pirated copies I got from my cop uncle. This is probably a metaphor for something.

@keithzg To be fair, it's from the "Life" section. But it's still pretty weird coming from CBC and not, you know, a sassy lifestyle blog.

@zatnosk @Pyretta Yep. And one with surprisingly minimal consequences for engaging in a nuclear war (I did that fairly often back in the Civ II days), if I remember correctly.
Honestly, though, my favourite thing about Civ II was how easy it was to hack and rewrite. All the dialogue was just .txt files, and I think a lot of the actual game logic was stored as plain text, as well.
I distinctly remember re-writing a lot of the dialogue options (very immature jokes, I'm sure).

@jackdaw_ruiz I read a long time ago that Sid Meier is a libertarian with some very particular ideas, which he hard coded into SimCity. This explains why people practically riot over even small tax increases. I'll check out the link!

@violet Well, if you just eliminate most of the humans, the problem of human-created climate change will be greatly reduced.

Reader's Block.

Interesting. I've never really thought about this as a concept, but it makes a lot of sense and I definitely allow myself to succumb to it. I'd probably add something about the semi-addictive nature of our various devices, but "too much TV" is probably close enough.

@ajroach42 I was 21 when it came out, so a little older, but I still can't give you that sort of evaluation. It's still very much "of my time."
I mostly remember thinking, when it first came out, "Hey, Green Day is good again."
But, then, I also never considered Green Day punk (I guess they were pop punk, but I came of age during the "alternative music" phase, so we called it alternative back during the Dookie and Insomniac days).

Firefox now blocks Facebook and other common trackers by default. That's pretty handy. I use Privacy Badger anyway, plus the Facebook Container plugin, but having trackers blocked by default, without plugins, is a good step forward.
