@JordiGH I hate that this is the exact reason a lot of people won't vote for him.

The Othering of Jagmeet Singh is expected, but somewhat ironic if you listen to the three main party leaders speak. Singh comes across as the most normal and relate-able of the three. But he's brown and wears a turban so he might as well be from Mars in the eyes of many people. :(

@FssOfDeath I don't think it's sufficiently cheaper for my needs, since we'd probably end up wanting the ability to play together, in which case the full system becomes more cost effective. If I'd be the only one ever playing, the Lite might be good enough.

@puffinus_puffinus @squeakypancakes That said, I decided to back away quickly when I realized they were organizing via public Google docs that anyone can access (I think only approved people could actual edit them, but that's still an incredibly foolish way to organize intentionally illegal actions).

@puffinus_puffinus @squeakypancakes I'm not totally anti-XR, but I feel like the central organizers have some really bad ideas (call the cops and tell them you're going to commit crimes!) that might get adopted by smaller cells who don't know any better. But I do see some of the groups being more explicitly lefty than others. Our group here is small but some of them were waving hammer and sickle flags at the climate strike today.

@bartleby You might be surprised to hear that I don't think we ever explicitly studied capitalism. It was just accepted as the status quo.

Well, we bought a new car. It's a fucking boat, but it's at least a relatively fuel efficient boat (as efficient as our previous car, despite being larger, so at least green-ish technology is sort of progressing, albeit not fast enough).

Hopefully, this one last a long time and will be the last fossil fuel vehicle we ever need to buy. 🤞

@Greg Probably. And, I mean, it's not like I expected her to be pro-communist, but she could have at least tried to avoid the most base sort of propaganda.

Come to think of it, I think she was the same teacher who's lessons on the French Revolution focused reeeeaally heavily on Robbspeiere and The Terror...like, way more than was probably reasonable.

Maybe she was just extremely conservative.

Current status: trying to car shop while my daughter is asleep in the back of our rental car. So...wife is test driving first and then we'll tag out.

Even back then, as a teenager who was a sort of primitive liberal Marxist shithead (communism is the greatest system of all, on paper, BUT WHAT ABOUT HUMAN NATURE?!), I knew she was wrong and that this was just propaganda, but I didn't have the tools to call her out...none of us did because we were 14 years old and not red diaper babies. *sigh*

My Grade 8 teacher introduced the unit on Communism by telling us that, from now one, everyone is going to get the same grade. It'll be Cs for everyone. I was a smart ass, so I knew something was up and didn't take the bait, but a lot of the A students were pissed and screaming how it wasn't fair. The C and D students were all, "Sweet, now I don't have to do homework!"

Then she let it drop: "And that's how communism works..."

Question about image descriptions: do they not work on animated GIFs? Yesterday, I posted a GIF and added an image description, but as far as I can tell the image description disappeared the moment I sent the toot.

@FssOfDeath Yeah, I feel like I'd want the regular Switch just to have the option to play on the TV...plus then I can destroy my wife in Mario Kart. LOL

Can't play local multi-player on a Lite unless there are two in the house...and then you're playing online and the whole thing just seems like a pain in the ass (and needlessly more expensive than just buy a normal Switch + extra controller).

@nev I know this is not exactly the same as what you're talking about but, boy, does it reflect how "market thinking" has infiltrated every aspect of our lives. No wonder we've turned housing into a commodity.

@nev I vaguely remember a time before all those house flipping shows trained everyone to think of their house as an investment instead of, you know, a home. So many people, even ones who will never flip a home, are afraid to design their home the way they'd prefer because it might hurt the "resale value" because they've been brainwashed to think of their house primarily as an investment in the future rather than a place to live their lives.
