@cypnk Bad news for anyone who thinks most of the world isn't held together by a handful of Excel spreadsheets running legacy macros and doing all kinds of hacky shit that Excel was never meant to do.

Semi-related to this: man, "smart TV" UIs are terrible. The one on my old "smart Bluray" player sucked, the one on my new TV is better but still incredibly awkward.
Definitely going to get a Chromecast Ultra and plug that in. I have a love-hate relationship with Google, but the Chromecast experience is just so much "smarter" and easier than any smart TV interface I've used.

@freakazoid Yeah, the various junk "channels" that are included by default is comedic. There's one for CBC News, which is nice, but it seems to just be on a loop rather than a live news feed, so I'm not sure what the point of that is.

@bgcarlisle Academic language making knowledge exclusive to those who understand the lingo...and then also making it only available in German. That's an extra level of exclusionary academia.

@freakazoid I think I can run the cord through the wall, but doing so would significantly limit the ability to reposition the antenna if the signal gets wonky. I may do that anyway.

@freakazoid Yeah, we didn't go with the Frame because it was way more than we were willing to pay. This is a more base-level Samsung, so we don't have the fancy "one box" thing.
As for the antenna...it's just an OTA antenna, it can't spy on me. If anything, Plex would be spying.
(TV UI is, uh, just changing the channels like a normal TV...the UI for the various apps is shit, though, for sure.)
But, good point about the tuner allowing OTA on any device.

There are now 890 Pokemon? I can't handle that many. The original 150 are much more in line with Dubar's number. I can't have an individual, meaningful relationship with 890 Pokemon! No wonder people just treat them like caged fighting animals to be traded away and discarded like trash.

Do I have an ugly TV antenna & cable sticking out from my new "cordless" (as in the cords are hidden in the wall) TV setup, or do I get a wireless TV tuner, attach the antenna to that, put it somewhere unobtrusive & then use Plex to watch live TV on the TV?
The latter seems so absurdly hacky & probably won't have as good picture quality as directly plugging in & watching over the air, but with everything else being neat & hidden, the antenna sticks out like a sore thumb.

@msh I do not. I'm confused how it works. Might be a perk since they're also my host? (My other domain is registered elsewhere.)

Everyone in my house gates Pogo dogs except me and this is a tragedy. I mean, yes, they're junk food, but they're great and have a lot of nostalgia for me.

I mean, there's also the whole petro-state thing, but even a lot of rural people aren't happy about how oil and gas have become the provincial religion. Look at the farmers who allow wells on their land, because they need the money, but do so very ambivalently because they're worried about health risks and the fact that many wells will be abandoned and not cleaned up when they're not longer profitable.

I'm joking, but only partly. I think a left-wing prairie populist party could stand to do quite well in Alberta (and Saskatchewan). A lot of people here vote Conservative for tribal reasons, not because they actually agree with the policies. To an extent, they see the Cons as the only federal party that isn't made up of "urban elites" who look down on rural people. There's a degree of truth to this, so people identify with the Conservative brand even when it does always match with their values.

it took me over 35 years, but i think i'm finally figuring out that what this life is about is:
* finding a home where i feel safe to be myself, and have space to relax and work on small projects
* finding work that isn't too taxing, covers bills and food, and has at least a neutral impact on society
* having community that cares about mei can't really ask for more than that. just working toward that is enough of a life mission

I've updated my review of Sobrii non-alcoholic gin to include a highball recipe that I made with it and quite enjoyed.

@msh Even better, a test tube (either with a flat bottom or a fancy holder to look hipsterish on your coffee table). Make it only just 1-2 oz and do coffee shots to get that caffeine hit extra fast.
