@ItsTheManOnTheMoon @RexfordGTugwell Service is good and important for a functioning society, but I also want a dirty ol' bar like the Legion has (but I am definitely not join the Legion, even though I'm pretty sure you no longer have to be a veteran to join -- way too much baggage, plus the inherent troop worship that goes along with it).

@ItsTheManOnTheMoon @RexfordGTugwell So now I've been looking up fraternal orders out of curiosity. It seems like all of the old school ones require a belief in a supreme being even when it is completely irrelevant to what the group does (as is the case with the Elks).

The closest thing I can find here in Canada, that's actually secular, is the Kin Club (maybe better known as the Kinsmen Club, but apparently Kinsmen = men only, Kinette = women only, Kin = coed). But it's mostly a service org.

That's always the rub with these organizations. No atheists allowed (unless you define "higher power" incredibly loosely).

At least they now allow communists, as long as you haven't actively attempted to overthrow the government. ;)

@ItsTheManOnTheMoon I don't even necessarily disagree with the idea of a "men's group," whatever that might look like. But it's not a good look for what amount to social clubs (that also tend to be business networking orgs, albeit unofficially). Like, a men's group to navigate changing masculinity norms is probably good. A social club that amounts to an old boys club closing ranks against modernity, less so.

@ItsTheManOnTheMoon My favourite thing about Freemasonry is the existence of "clandestine" lodges which seem to be basically the same as the normal ones except they allow women and are therefore not recognized by any of the grand lodges.

@ItsTheManOnTheMoon There's an Odd Fellows lodge not far from my house, but I don't think it's active anymore. I've actually long been curious about these sort of organizations and the Odd Fellows seem general more open and "modern" than the Masons.

@ItsTheManOnTheMoon I don't know a lot about this in reality, but I know they have a reputation as being "the poor person's Freemasons," which actually makes them sound better, to me. Don't need to be a rich guy to afford the dues? Good. I think I also read that one of their main things used to be providing members with a sort of unofficial health insurance in the days when it was much harder to afford decent insurance, so that is also pretty cool.

@ThatGeoGuy I checked the forums and wiki. Nothing seemed to match my issue, but it resolved itself overnight so 🤷♂️

@MutoShack Yeah, it's pretty rough on a lot of sites. I forget what made me go with links instead of Lynx (which, I think, is more popular). It does have a graphical version, which is actually pretty solid for sites that are mostly text with some images.

For a laugh, I tried to access Facebook via the links2 CLI browser last night. It was basically just a giant thing that said, "YOU MUST ENABLE JAVASCRIPT," which doesn't surprise me in the least.
